I'd like to video what's on my computer screen with my voice over, so I can explain what I'm doing. I've seen videos on youtube. help !

FRAPS is good, easy to use etc and they used to have an evaluation package but I think it'd watermark your videos.

I got Fraps for the same reason but I can only record approx 30second bursts.
I think you need to subscribe/buy in order to have it any good.

CamStudio is most definitely the way to go.

Can record straight to xvid/divx for a start.. FRAPS forces you to use its own codec, and as has been said is very limited unless you shell out $30 for it.

CamStudio is open source, well designed and free

Yes, CamStudio is the best if you're unwillinging to shed out £20. I prefer the smaller footprint of fraps, and the custom codec works fine for postproduction using Sony Vegas or similar imo.

CamStudio has serious issues. Even on modern hardware it won't record more than 10/15 FPS.

Personally, after trying to use camstudio for a few months I gave up with it. It has serious bugs/flaws, even for free software.

I just used it to make a promotional video for my work, recorded to full HD @ 30fps, encoded as xvid single pass with no problems whatsoever.

The resultant video is silky smooth.

When you record it give you two figures: target FPS (to capture) and actual FPS.

When I set it to record @ 10 FPS the actual (unique) frames capture is about 5 FPS. The resultant video is 10 FPS, but 50% are duplicate frames.

When I set it to record @ 20 FPS the actual (unique) frames captured is about 12 FPS. The resultant video is 20 FPS, but ...

Does this describe the problem better?

Yes, you will end up with a video that claims to be what you asked for (30 FPS if you asked for 30 FPS). But the *real* data capture rate will be about 50% - 66% of this.

I have verified this bug with other users and on different equipment. Trust me, I *do* know what I'm talking about here. So I would *not* recommend Camstudio. You will not get what you think you're getting.

Fair enough :)

Personally I haven't seen the problem you are describing as I loaded it into WLMM afterwards to stick in a few powerpoint slides etc and WLMM didnt seem to have masses of repeat frames. Maybe it's just me.

Just tried that Ashampoo capture product posted by A[L]C up there and it seems pretty good, so perhaps try that too.

I use Fraps to record my WOW play. The video quality is awesome but the file size is a bump.
For desktop recording, try other stuff like DemoCreator (shareware with editing feature) or ScreenToaster (web-based and free).

Still trust FRAPS then into Vegas for postproduction or just mixing down to divx/xvid/mp4. Never had any problems. If you've got the HDD space, use it.

Doesn't FRAPS only record in d3d applications, or something? I didn't know you could record just things you were doing on the desktop with it.

As stated by Temi, since vista it's been available. Something to do with GUI restriction.

Still, there are programs that offer better functionality I'm sure, for recording tutorial-esk desktop videos. But FRAPS all round is reliable and worth getting used to.
