how capable is the i7 860 still? (no more replies needed.)

a lot of it depends on what games you play.many games with a decent gpu will play fine.id probably try and bag a 970 gtx or a 1050 ti if you can get one cheap enough and just play what you like until you do a full upgrade.you may have to flash bios though.

Well game wise, don’t know yet, I am playing old games on my laptop that are pre-windows 7 and my intel graphics are the intel 4 series attacted to the C900 celeron lol, but those are the games I chose to bring with me to test, if I make a decent enough system I will probably install again sim city 2013, Anno 2205 for now, I do want FO4 again and I might try my hands at No Mans Sky again and will likely install sims 4 and SC2, but I also look at indie games on steam and other sites, I may put RB6S on again to get any updates, but I have that on Xbox which I play with the missus and friends, so not a priority, I don’t know if I can be bothered with the division now as I’ve missed out on so much over the months, so my gaming requirement isn’t high, anything new I’d get on Xbox one unless it’s something pc specific.

I didn’t get the i7 to focus on gaming, I got it because it’s £35 and will be much better than the i3 540 that it currently has, but unless I get Like a 660 or an HD7000 range then I wouldn’t spend more than 1050ti money on brand new anyways , I wouldn’t need the grunt, maybe I’ll look back in to music creating and video editing or design stuff.

I do need the system to last though as all the times I go through computer stuff I haven’t been able to settle on anything good like 1151 socket or am4 or just anything I want, I do get fed up after while, so I suppose I will want a decent all rounder till I decide what I want to do, but I won’t get rid of this system unless it fails miserably as I am going to build an AM1 system for myself and this intel will always be a good secondary system to any new tech.

To give you an idea my i5-760 @ 3.8 was not close to making out my previous 280x Gpu.

Before that I had an i3 which I removed and replaced with the i5-760. It was a significant upgrade going from 2 to 4 cores at the time.

Aye, from memory my 380x wasn't bottlencked either by my i5 750

While those are higher graphic cards than I’d look at, it is good to know that even the i5 didn’t cause any problems like that, I haven’t even put my system as it is to the test, I had win 7 then decided I’d try win 10 again sad the free upgrade is over and other than a bit of general and downloading some programs and windows updates, I haven’t done anything with it even with my 610 installed lol, suppose I didn’t have time really, but then I’ve had 2 newer generations i3’s so they be all pretty much the same.

Did you guys have to overclock your i5’s to compete or was that just out of general interest/fun? Though I might buy a none stock cooler, I don’t want to have to overclock if I don’t need to even for mid-high end graphic cards.

Still on my i5 750 and no issues at all (got it OC to 4GHz) except for BF 1, although I put that down to BF 1, awfully optimised game, you just have to look on various forums to see people having issues and from my experience there are plenty of rounds where I can play at a solid 70 fps (got FPS capped to that) but then next night, I would have FPS drops to 30's.....

This is at 1080P with a 290, still doing very well the GPU too as long as I drop the most demanding settings, which generally have little to no impact on IQ anyway.

Overclocking has definitely helped with min. fps and it is very easy to do, plenty of guides on youtube etc.

If you play @ 4k then CPU will have zero impact, all about the GPU then:

No doubt some games definitely benefit from better CPUs @ 1080P but generally the games that benefit the most are just poor optimised POS i.e. PUBG

Also, for any game that has vulkan/dx 12, use it, it helps massively i.e. the division, I went from fps drops to 40's with quite a few settings dropped to medium on dx 11 to a constant 60 fps (my cap again) with much higher settings with dx 12, although some games dx 12 implementation is awful i.e. bf 1 again.....

thanks for that, so basically i cant go too wrong with the i7 then and be more down to what gpu i end up choosing.

Depends on the games. Something like BF1 64p online or Fallout 4 would show up it's age a lot worse than most other games but it's still playable levels.

Honestly, in the majority of popular games - GTA V, COD WW2, Destiny 2, WOW, Overwatch, etc it's still a perfectly solid CPU for reliable 60fps gameplay once you have a decent card.

I played some BF1 64p on an i7-860 and GTX1050 a while back and it was suprisingly good considering we're talking about a CPU almost 8 years old. There were a fair few dips from 60fps alright but it never went too bad (I think about 40 was lowest)....that's still massively improved over the mess that is the PS4 and XB1 versions.

I've got an X3350 in my other PC and that seems comparable to the i7 860, that thing does ok in games with a good GPU.
