How cool is this?

Richard Browning sets world record in jet engine 'Iron Man' suit.

For me this is really cool. It could be the beginning of a new form of transport. What do you think? Does it have potential? I think so. Just think how cool it would be to fly around.

Until they create an Iron-man style arc-reactor, (unlimited fuel) I can't see it being a new form of transport. You currently need jet fuel and that runs out pretty quick.

Nuclear power is far more efficient than jet fuel and who knows what kind of power could be developed in the future? Seems a little myopic to presume to know what lies ahead don't you think?

Aye pretty cool, certainly will be a first step in that sort of thing. Of course at the moment it just isn't practical.

And yes, helicopters are cool, but they're extremely subject to the current weather conditions, not to mention easily able to get taken out of the sky.

nuclear power is also very heavy, plus the idea of having something that flies and is nuclear should rightly be a terrifying prospect.

the us air force experimented with nuclear reactors on planes, including flying a demo aircraft with a reactor on board (albeit the reactor wasn't powering the engine) before common sense prevailed.

they also experimented with 1-man jet packs/suits/hovering machines as well as nasa considering something similar as an alternative to the moon buggy, all were dismissed at the time as being ridiculously dangerous and impractical.

take this chap- with the most modern of technology he's created a flying suit that's bulky, awkward to fly and almost certainly would struggle to take the weight of another person (for rescue applications) or a soldiers kit (for military applications).

i suspect the future of personal air transport is going to lie in effectively scaled up drones as an alternative to a car, electrically powered (or possibly jet powered using synthesized fuels), with automated guidance (ie driverless)
