how could someone do this?

I don't think I'd even want them burnt to death. Beaten severely with a blunt object maybe, but not burnt to death.

It just makes us as bad as them. Having a fight fire with fire attitude can lead to a very serious situation.

Punish them within the constraints of the law. What I do think though is laws regarding cruelty, ie - abuse of animals, kids, GBH, rape etc should carry much heavier custodial sentences.

If the laws for cruelty to animals were stronger then I would certainly agree there's no need to wish bad thoughts on them. As it stands, the sentence they get for crimes like this are a joke, it's part of where my strong feelings come from. If they were punished adequately for their crimes I'd be happy.

What i was trying to say is that if someone thinks they can treat a living thing like that, they deserve the same treatment. It's only fair. If you can't take what you give, don't give it.

The punishment they *should* get? 5 minutes alone in a room with the dog's owner. That should do it.

As a dog owner myself I totally agree. My dog has never done harm to anyone and if anybody were to inflict this sort of suffering to him I shudder to think what I might do to them.

Then we basically agree? Tougher, custodial sentences for acts of cruelty.

There's plenty of human torture going on daily as well, it's not just animals like this one being treated that way.

The fact of the matter is nothing should be treated like that.

I agree wholeheartedly mate, but I think what's got most people upset & angry about this case is because it's a defenceless animal.

As you said, human torture goes on daily, but because of the news coverage of events over the past few years a lot of people have become desensitised to it all. That doesn't make it any less wrong, if that makes sense, but does explain some people's reaction to things like this.

I cannot abide cruelty to animals and what gets me even more is that the maximun penalty for such acts in 6 months !!

Is the unbearable suffering to the dog punishable by 6 months a just punishment ? How about 5 years for starters ? The fact they muzzled the dog to stop it barking makes it even more despicable.

While I can't really condone people taking the law into their own hands, I can't feel pity for the scum responsible should they get a good shoeing !

I've got a nasty feeling that these people may have been the owner - I could be completely wrong though.

It is a disgusting story, I tend to get much more worked up about cruelty to animals than I do if it is done to people. It is tragic when someone is tortured but to me it always seems worse to do it to an animal because they almost certainly can't or won't fight back and can't articulate their distress in the same way.

I don't believe in vigilante justice and I never have but cruelty to animals comes pretty close to making me believe it worthwhile.

Point is mindless cruelty SHOULDN'T be normal

I know, but it is, and its going to get a lot worse than this, if the Govt don't get a grip on crime, and stop being a joke by dishing out holidays etc... to crims, then this country is going to be out of control. :(

I think so too, however it does annoy me how much of an uproar animal cruelty causes in this country yet violence against ones own passes seemingly unnoticed. It was a plain horrible thing to do to the poor dog but it was 'just' a dog. I am not an animal lover though, I have never and probably never will understand the relationship and feelings many animal lovers seem to have for their animals. Animals are there to be either be eaten or to work as far as I'm concerned ...but I would never condone such wicked cruelty towards any living thing.

I can't say as I am surprised or even particularly shocked by it, human beings can be cruel beyond most peoples comprehension when they think they can get away with it.
