How did Jaguar go from meh to awesome in no time?

Up until the new Merc E class came out i felt the XF was the car to have in that middle exec sector, the E class has moved the HMI and interior quality on to another level, and i guess the new 5 series next year will aswell.

The XF just has feel good factor, it feels much more special than a A6, and you feel less of **** driving it, compared to a 5 series (sorry:p).

F pace will be the car to define Jags future imo, if that takes off, that should provide some serious cash into the coffers for new developments.

I was in the market for an exec estate car and seriously considered the Jaguar. I was prepared to pay a premium for the car itself, but investigation shows up they're not that great to own unless you have deep pockets for servicing/maintenance - not something I could risk with wife and twins.

Thus it came down to Audi/BMW once again, which are not cheap but have an edge in reliability and running costs.

I have a lot of friends working for Jaguar/Land Rover (I used to work for them too) so it's good to see them doing well but one thing I am disappointed with on the new cars is the leg room, I went to the Jag showroom the other day and found the leg room to be insufficient for me at 6'4" in the XE,XF and even the XJ so now I am back to looking at the German brands for my new car purchase.

I was having a browse around auto trader last night. The nearly new XF-R's look incredible in white with the 'Black Pack'

Exhibit A Oh my lawd, stunning

That's not an XF-R though, just an XF with the R-Sport styling, basically equivalent to BMW M-Sport and Audi S-Line. But you're right, it's gorgeous

The XF-R looks different still with a different front bumper, rear diffuser and other changes. The car above is what I have, just a different colour

wasn't it basically that they hired Ian Callum as head of design and he totally didn't replicate his Aston Martin designs onto the Jags dragging them kicking and screaming into the 21st century?

1. Lots of money from Tata
2. Hire Ian Callum

That's pretty much it.

Awesome looking cars, lovely to drive but pretty poor ownership experience. It'll be interesting to see how loyalty %'s work out once everyone who's now buying XE's come to get a new car in a few years time.

.

In addition because they sell lots LandRovers and prop up the Jag brand....
The Jag SUVs could be what's needed to change it...... but they are working hard to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory unfortunately.

Has anyone seen the leaks of the new vehicle coming out next year? I think it looks great but struggle to see it in the market.

In answer to the OP,they haven't yet.

Out of the numerous people I know who've recently been in the market for a premium mid range saloon, all have considered Jaguars offerings but have without exception disregarded it in favour of either Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, this is no coincidence I feel.

Yes,Jaguar have come a long way but I don't see them as having caught up never mind overtaken the German competition unfortunately.

I had a pre-facelift XF 3.0D S, and it was - mostly - a fantastic car. The only real issue I had with it was the woeful headlights (non Xenon, as most were). It was a special place to be, drove really well and exuded a degree of class. I had thought that, for the first time, I might buy 'the same car again' with a new XF, but this was pre the current model. So, figured I would look elsewhere and maybe go back to the (now current) XF as subsequent car.

Ended up, quite happily, with my current steed - Mercedes CLS 350 AMG Line - which was ordered, specced and delivered tail end of 2014. As I approach 2yrs of ownership, starting to think on what to replace with in the next 6 months or so, and - the point of this post - I really don't expect it will be the XF. Having had a mooch about one in a showroom, I felt that it was a little short of MB (well, my CLS at least) in terms of materials, fit and finish. Certainly not bad, but just not as good. I think that Jaguar are just a little short right now, but, assuming they continue this road (and I hope that they do!), perhaps the next gen cars such as XF will truly be on a par with the best MB and ze Germans have to offer.

I also think Jag have taken a bit of a step back in terms of quality in the latest cars (XE and new XF), having driven a few they just don't feel as nice to sit in as my 2014 car. The plastics are a bit more plastic (you know what I mean :p), there's things like screw covers in the door cards, the lack of rotating vents, the little touches that made the XF a really special place to be...Whenever someone new gets in my car, they always comment on the gear selector rising up, the vents and just how classy it looks, I don't really think you'd get that in the new ones.

That's not to say the new cars aren't good, I'd definitely own one as despite the above, they've made some really good improvements too with the driving position, the infotainment and the layout of the centre console but it doesn't really feel that special any more.

Same with the exterior, they look nice and all, but they don't really stand out now, they've lost some of the lines that made them so smart looking. Also, that ghastly horizontal panel gap across the bonnet is just unforgivable :p

That's a big fat negative. White paint only looks good on a select handful of cars, usually exotic. Black wheels only really look good on the above also.

The XF-R is not exotic, it is a British supersaloon. It should look tastefully mean, without trying to win rap battles.

That's not even an XF-R, people seem to be missing it's a 2.2d :p

Didn't notice as the white paint was reflecting everything into the lens and the black wheels sucked in all light masking the brakes.

:o
