As for the OP's question, customers are intrigued, and they get particularly interested by free shipping so may sign up. Then get roped into the community...

This is why i signed up.
I was thinking of getting a graphics card, did a google search, and came across this site.
I lurked for a while, then signed up, then you just get sucked in. ;)

Obviously one member at a time but I think the recipe is giving a damn - the founder gives a damn, the mods do and the vast majority of the members do too.

So many forums are chock full of trolling and nastiness because it's hard to moderate it without being ridiculously stupid and over bearing, it's far easier to let it go.

It sometimes doesn't work here but the only reason it works most of the time is because the members allow it to and the mods don't let egos take over (some may disagree but the amount of discussion over anything controversial is amazing).

That's what I think anyway :)

I joined sooo long ago, I've survived every 'Cull' they could throw at the Forums and I've only bought 3 things from the Shop, granted one thing I bought did have a fault that was dealt with quickly and without any problems!...

Dunno why I've stuck around so long!, I am a member of a few other forums, but I don't frequent them a fraction of the time I spend on here!!..

It's weird!!

(Only Rotty and Me are Oct 2002-ers up to this point!! :) )

How many culls have there been? I seem to only remember 2? I can barely remember how the forums used to look lol.

I think it would be interesting to see a poll for why everyone joined the forum.

Eg a) free shipping biatch
B) via the shop
C) a friend recommended it
D) googling something lead me here

Etc

Via the shop for me, in the early days before the iffy service period when OcUK expanded too quickly. I got advice in the shop based on what was best for me, not what was most profitable for the shop, from staff who really knew their stuff. I ended up with a better spec for my budget than the one I'd come up with myself, because they knew a lot more about hardware than I did. That had two effects. Firstly, I stopped shopping elsewhere (lots of choice in those days) and bought all my kit from OcUK. Secondly, the pre-overclocked kit got me into overclocking, which got me onto the forums because it seemed likely to me that a shop specialising in overclocked kit would have customers who knew about overclocking and might have a forum attached to it, so I looked for it.

I don't buy a lot of hardware nowadays, but the forums are broad enough to hold my interest and they're much more civilised than most forums. Coupled with the free delivery, that means that I've stayed with OcUK for the hardware I do buy.

EDIT: My memory must be at fault, or some dates are wrong. My first purchase from OcUK was, at the latest, a complete PC using the brand new Athlon. Slot A format, 600MHz but running at 700MHz. Or was it 500 but running at 600? I also remember have an overclocked K6-2 300 setup. Maybe I got that from OcUK. I bought from everywhere in those days - my first foray into overclocking was with a Cyrix 5x86-100 I bought at the market in Trentham Gardens. Which was as unstable as a drunk on a pogo stick when I overclocked it at all :)

Talking about the past. Anyone tried looking back with that internet time machine thing?

http://web.archive.org/web/20000302123558/http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

This what I remember! Read a pc mag and then came straight to ocuk to buy the globalwin 802. At the time I had some cheap-nasty generic towers and the gw802 was the holy grail to me. I then found the messageboard and floated about for a while until there was a cull or a revamp... cant remember?

EDIT: Argghh the link dont work right!
EDIT2: It loads ok. Im tired, time for bed I think lol

Wanted free delivery on my first PC build. Also went to General Hardware to get help on what spec to make.

Stulid helped loads, of course.

And then after a while I wandered into General Discussion and now this is my most viewed webpage. I enjoy spending time reading threads, I don't post that much but I enjoy reading.

The forum title makes me chuckle, somehow reminds me of when a older female relative would say 'Ohh how did you get so big?' When I was a kid. :D

@Topic

Personally I thinks it one of the best forums I've frequented over the years, others where mostly MMO related, Guild forums are good, 'Official' forums are usually full of loons.

Good lols, good convo, lots of knowledgable people

Hats of to the Founders and Mods, and everyone who's been involved over the years :)

Same here:p...ive been here for ages now...i was a member here when we had Dons such as Mindyourbeak and a few others, who have now gone to other pastures.

Cant remember when i first joined, its been that long:o

Wow.. I remember 'Beaky' and his liberal use of the 'BanHammer' and some weird contraption in the DON's room for flogging or Streching miscreants!.. :D

get over it; there are loads of pre Oct 2002 members still active. Can't believe it's been nearly 10 years now - time flies!!!

I meant we were the only Pre-2002'ers up to that point in the Thread! Not just Me and Rotty are the only Pre-2002'ers still on the Forums :p

Is there a support group for OcUK Addiction???

think I originally joined in 2004 or so, lost the email and pword etc. Then I had a dream where Darth Vader came down from planet Vulcan and told me that if I didn't rejoin the forums then he'd melt my brain - I'm here out of fear.

That's nowhere near as bad as the student room being number 53 - worst website on the internet (including reddit ;)).

Ctrl F for "overclockers uk", it's rank 533. I assume that's global, in which case that's pretty damn good considering this is at heart a niche interest forum.

From what I can tell, that's wrong.

Look at Overclock.net, which they rank at 98:

http://www.overclock.net/f/

Less users online, less posts in the forums. Don't forget that OcUK prunes threads, or used to.

If that's at 98, then OcUK could be quite a bit higher in fact.
