How disabled do you have to be then?

Anyone remember those pale blue invalid carriages? I don't think those who didn't need them had them, just because of the horrible looks of them.

They were also death traps, unsuitable for most people who would have needed them and completely useless if you had any family or had any problem that meant you couldn't use it and get out and then use a stick/crutch ;) (IIRC they didn't have any room for a wheelchair even).

They were the worst sort of one size fits all solution to disabled mobility, akin to giving everyone who can't walk (regardless of the reason) a walking stick, or given everyone who couldn't walk a manually propelled wheelchair with no handles at the back.

One of the big reasons the motability scheme is popular is that it lets people choose a vehicle that best suits their needs - you need something small that lets you put a push wheelchair in the back, you can get it, you need something big enough for an electric wheelchair or mobility scooter, you can get it, you need something suitable for a parent in a wheelchair and a kid or two, you can get it.

IIRC the motability scheme actually turns a very small profit most years because it doesn't have many of the problems you get with leasing cars, and they get great deals from the manufacturers on the cars.

I'm all for means testing disability benefits. Cameron, as a multi millionaire, used to claim them for his son.

They were hideous!

I was just jogging memories, they recalled them in 2003 and crushed most of them, they were banned from the roads for being dangerous.

IIRC the vehicles are purchased also with no VAT, would it not be a better idea to allow people to do this independently of motability if they wish to or do not qualify for the scheme but are still disabled to an extent. There could be measures in place to stop abuse of that, minimum term of ownership, use by or for the benefit of the disabled person.

She needs to play the system.... honesty in Great Britain left a long time ago....

BEST THING I ever heard was on The Last Leg.

Get disabled people to work (which some cannot do as no suitable jobs) in the benefits offices to do with disability and sickness - they can tell who is disabled and who is taking the ****! It would save lots of money paying out, get disabled people back to work and genuine cases would get it....

It's a winner!

Why would they be any more capable aside from experience of their particular disability? It isn't like all disabled people suffer from the same conditions.

They don't - every single person is different. Unfortunate people have a much better attitude to life than those who have never had to adapt to the most mundane things because you are different. I'm more disabled than you are and technically I could play on it and claim it and take the proverbial however I don't simply because I know genuinely disabled people from my time in hospital and it would feel like I was taking the ****. So I don't. That's why I think the attitude in the UK stinks at times.

Empathy can be a powerful tool.

I think all mobility cars should be stopped. If you need one pay for it out of your benefits. Its just another case of benefits britain.

I think posting should be stopped if you don't understand the subject you're discussing :p

The car is paid for with the benefit, it's on lease.

Too much username-post content here.

It's not like having an illness/disability gives people the ability to see how other people are affected.

Empathy. Until you've been there you can't have it. :)

Some very nice and very good people about but it would work better than the current system.

Hmm, she didn't appeal?

It's as if she was more interested in kicking up a fuss than actually being concerned about keeping the car... Fancy that.
