How do chokes work?

My 1990 Rover Metro 1.1 c (c = no cig lighter, nearside mirror, radio or full height rear bumper) just had a light to say the choke was out. You sure it's just not a dodgy bulb? :p

Nope, the light goes out when it wants you to pop the choke back in.

She won't let me drive it anyway. I'd kill it within 200 yards of setting off, she says. :D

FI isn't necessary nor is an ECU, my old 12V carbed toyota corolla had an auto choke :)

Auto choke is quite possibly the single most unreliable invention in automotive history. I reckon a fair bit of money has been made just by people selling manual choke conversions.

Mine was meant to be two pumps of the accelerator and it would work fine. Never did. The other carb fitted to later XR2's was apparently better, though they made less power (was it thermo controlled choke?)
