Okay I know it's through advertising like google adwords on loads of sites. But what about the millions of people that loads up the google home page each day to do a search, how do they make money on that? As there are no adverts running on the google search page, or are they running in the background?

I would really like to know about this?

How would ads running in the background do any good?!

"We are targeting adverts at you sir, but as you can't see them you'll have to /guess/ to what products are fitting for you".

It's mainly through sponsored links, they make a lot of money through that!

They aren't just a search engine, they develop a lot of applications and services including hardware (check here). Also not all their software is free, take Earth and Sketchup as examples both have 'pro' licenses, but on top of all of that the targeted advertising is the main money maker and also sponsored links as people have said.

The adverts on the side only show when you search for specific keywords that the advertiser has bought. For example, if I bought the keyword 'overclockers', then you'd see my ad.

The links in the yellow box at the top of the search results page and all the links in the right hand column are pay per click (adverts). As well as these, they have loads of other services, a lot of which have adverts and these adverts are usually tailed to you to try and make you click them. For example, if someone sends me an email to my Gmail account, and in it they mention computer processors, I would get a load of adverts for computer component sites like overclockers when I read it.

They farm email addresses from the websites that their spider crawls, semantically link them then sell them to companies. In addition to sponsored links.

My thoughts, anyway.

google makes money from the sponsered and advertised links, and they have about a million other services, the money they make they use to buy shares, and take over other companies, hence even more money

i think that's highly unlikely, considering that would lead to spamming, and google's corporate motto is "do no evil"...
