How do I change a photo, say a ratio of 1:1.5 to 1:1.25 without having an unequal 'compression' of width to height?

e.g. In Photoshop, when I open a photo of 4288x2848 (1:1.5) in size and then go 'Image' -> 'Image Size' and manually type in 1280 in the width and 1024 in the height boxes the resultant photo would be 'dis-proportion' ie width compressed by 3.35 and height by 2.78 making say a tree fatter and shorter compares to the original.

I'm happy to crop the image and lost some of its 'width' details. I just want a 'new' image of 1280x1024 (1:1.25)!

Sorry about the confusion  hope the above makes sense.

Cheers :D

Crop Tool / Put in your dimensions at the top / Select area. The crop box that you drag out will be the aspect ratio and dimensions you define at the top.

Just type '1280 px' (make you define px, or it will assume centimeters, cm) and '1024 px' in the width or height boxes respectively. The resulting photo will be exactly the dimensions you specify.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned "Content Aware Scaling" in Ps.
Use it to alter the ratio of your photo without (much) distortion.

It's hard to recommend such things when not everyone will be on CS5 yet. We can be pretty sure whatever version of Photoshop the OP has he'll have the Crop tool. Always best to learn the basic ways first - Dabble with the fancy stuff later!

Yes you're right.

If he has CS4, it's available in that version too.
