How do I check if the hard drive is broken?

Hi there,

How do I run a test on the hard drive to see that it is not broken or corrupt or anything that could go wrong with it?

Connect it up, and have a look at the SMART status in something like Speedfan. Then run a full surface scan on the disk.
Finally, run the manufacturers diagnostics past it, if there are any errors or similar flagged.
