I currently have Realtek HD onboard audio and Logitech Z5500 speakers.

Do I plug them directly into the onboard audio OR plug them into the Z5500 control unit?

If I connect them to the Z5500, do I hook it up to the PC Optical/Spdif?

Also, if using analogue to connect the Z5500 to the PC with Windows set to output 5.1, when I plug the headphones into the Z5500, I assume the audio will be messed up so I need to set the Realtek to stereo as well?

Thank you.

i would have thought they'd be fine through the speaker controll's headphone socket, if you have them with you then just test both and find out, im pretty sure the headphone output bypasses the amp and is just the same as it would be straight out of the green output on the mobo

Depending on the quality of the DAC on the Z5500, would it be worth trying digital connection from the PC to the Z5500?

Also, would an external DAC help if I am simply gaming in stereo via headphones?

on average digital is the better connection. if you can use it then do! im not sure as to the external DAC though, sorry.

do you have both the speakers and headphones?
