Hi

I've got a USB hard drive that I use to keep my server back-ups on. This lies in a cupboard in the house, but this ain't too clever if the house goes up in smoke, so it's now keep it in the garage which is at the bottom of the garden.

Then I though it would be great if I could connect it up.
The only cabling I have is a 6 core cable that was a spare phone line.

What would be great is something like a USB to some sort of line driver in the house, and the same in the garage.

Has anybody got any bright ideas as to simplest way to get this thing connected?

USB over ethernet.

Ethernet is happy using 4 cores of some UTP cable. Run that down to the end of your garden. Crimp both ends, stick a cheap USBOIP hub in the shed and plug the other end into your router.

What I should have said in my first post was that I can't run any cables to the garage. The 6 core that was the spare phone line is an existing connection which is run underground.

I though about trying ethernet but the cable ain't twisted pair and it's over a fair distance.

Anybody every done USB to RS-485 and back again?

I don't want a wireless solution either.

Thanks for the input though.

If you won't use the phoneline, won't run any extra cables and won't go wireless. I don't think there is any way to connect it, unless, maybe mains networking?

The simplest way would be wireless if you ask me. (if the garage aint to far anyway) or running another cable

Agreed with this chap tbh. Unless you're willing to spend time and money looking into a ghetto VDS Serial link over that phone line then there's not a whole lot of options open to you.

Wireless seems to be the best bet.
