I've got this PC which i'm typing from.
I've also got a decomissioned PC that I don't use, but want to keep for heritage's sake. The old PC has 4Gb left of HDD space. And I want to reformat the new PC (this one i'm typing from) HDD and start all over.

How can I save the files I want to the old HDD? Do I just simply plug in the IDE cable and expect it come in My Computer (Bearing in mind the old HDD has the OS on as well). Will this cause conflictions?

The new PCs HDD is SATA where as the old is IDE. Will this be a problem?

Can you set the jumpers on the old disk to slave.

In the bios, set the sata to boot first.

When windows loads it might say there are two versions to boot from.

Pick one, when it boots, you will see what os has booted,

You should be able to explore the other then save what ever.

Think so! If the other os boots, shut down and choose the other os to boot.

Did this myself lately.

Put the Old HDD in.. it may say something in the area of, 'Do you want to Transfer System Settings etc', click no.

Then it should be in the My Computer.

Transer files from new HDD to Old HDD, in a folder you can remember (My Documents is a good choice).

Then take Old HDD out, and then format the new one and install Windows again, and out the old HDD back in and then copy the files across and bobs your mothers brother.

LoL at your last line.
Do I need to set the HDD to slave? The existing and only HDD in there is SATA. Also, anything in BIOS?

As far as I know, you can't set a Serial ATA drive to slave. Just plug the old hdd in, set the jumpers to slave anyway on the hdd. Go into your BIOS, set the Serial ATA drive as your first boot device. If given the option of loading two OS's at the boot screen, pick the first one.

Once booted up, go into My Computer, and it should be there in Local Disks. ;)
