How do I find out what CPU my MoBo will take?

Hi guys,

I need some help and guidance.

I’d like to upgrade my CPU. At the moment I have an E6700 running at stock speed. I have tried to overclock using easytune, but every time it locks up my computer. I’m not doing that again!

How can I find out what CPUs my motherboard can take? My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R.

Thanks.

You should save urself some cash by reading the overclocking sticky and jumping in the bios. :)

Thanks for the reply,

What do you mean?

“You should save urself some cash by reading the overclocking sticky and jumping in the bios”.

Can you provide a link? I don’t understand.

Thanks.

Hi, we have a Overclocking sticky in the Overclocking forum which may help - Clicky

Ideally you need to overclock in the BIOS as overclocking within windows often leads to problems.

Thanks for explaining that..

I’ve just read the sticky and I have to be honest, I don’t understand 90% of it. At the moment I have the ‘F10’ BIOS. According to the above list, if I update the BIOS to F12, I can either install a E8600 (which runs at 3.33) or a Q9650 (which runs at 3.00). I know the Q CPU runs slower, but it has two extra cores. It might run games faster.

Thanks.

Dont go with a E8600 as a E8400 should get towards 4Ghz on your mobo easy. I understand the sticky looks complicated but give it a read then have a poke around in your bios and see if you can understand any that you read. Hows life in merthyr? Im about a hour the other side of Brecon.

I don’t think I want to overclock a new CPU. According to the sticky, overclocking voids your warranty and increases the risk of premature death of you're hardware.

The E8600 has a faster speed, so it should play games better. I don’t know of many games that actually makes use of quad cores. None of the games I have mention playing better/faster on quad cores.

Merthyr sucx..

Git yaself in dat bios !!

Once in there you will sink to the lowest depths possible

We won't hear you post for weeks as you will be torturing the bios to find all its little traits :) and pushing your fsb and ram to their max

Then wham, a post will appear with many a fancy picture of temp readings/benchmarking results and cpuz's and gpuz's like they were going out of fashion

Can see it now, "My First Overclock, Why didnt i do it sooner" as the thread title

Seriously, read that guide a few times, it sounds harder reading than it is actually doing the clocking ;)

What's the worst that can happen ?? blackout Merthyr ?

Arma2 uses quad cores :)

As for the risk of premature death, that can happen on underclocked cpu's and gpu's not to mention ram lol

How long you planning on keeping the innards, if more than a decade then worry about failure, if not clock and have fun learning, you can always go back to stock settings after just trying ;)

vcore, the volatge to a cpu, my stock rating is 1.275v @ 2.4Ghz
vcore i use clocking to 3.6Ghz is 1.475, with a bit of v-droop (ohh arr missus) it's actuall showing 1.42 aint like you're shoving the power of a lightning strike through the core to raise it's speed

You're right too, about Merthyr i mean, only like the asda there as it was a decent store

Anyways food for thought, and you'll get plenty of help if you tinker a bit and need advice on how to test things are stable etc

Take Care

Iv had a E8600 and honestly it is overpriced. A E8600 is just a overclocked E8400 ;)

+1

E6700 is still an excellent CPU.

If you think that trying to OC is going to kill your chip, you should see me about a year ago putting 2.0v through my poor E2200 to get it to 3.9ghz __ON AIR__ haha. Yet it still works just fine ;-).

Browse through the forums, use search option, there are plenty posts with similar build to yours that will point you in the right direction.
