How do I find out what is causing this disk activity?

Hi,

I wasn't sure whether to put this in here on in the HD section but I think it may well be more relevant in here. Just over the last few days I have noticed a bit of strange disk activity on my system.

No matter what you are doing, either running something, opening or accessing a folder or even if the desktop is just sat there and you are not even touching the mouse, there is a regular, almost rythmic disk activity.

It occurs every minute or so, almost to the second. When it happens, for about 2 seconds, the Vista "busy" circle appears on the mouse pointer and the hard drive where my OS resides grinds.

I'm running a gadget in the sidebar that shows core activity in the CPU and upon this happening both cores of my E6300 spike from idle to 40-55% and then settle back down again. I've done an antispyware scan using Super Antispyware and Spysweeper and I have also ran a full AV scan with Avast. All done in safe mode and with system restore turned off. The only thing it flagged up was that Avast found this :-

win32:Rbot-CSN[Trj]

It was removed and renamed and dumped in the vault. After rebooting and getting back to the desktop the system still does the same thing as far as this disk activity goes.

Looking via the Task Managet within the Applications, Services, Processes etc I can't see anything obviously untowards running that may cause this. Any ideas and also is there anything software wise I can install that will monitor disk usage and when a spike like this occurs in the manner it is doing so - locate what is actually causing it and report it?.

Other than it being annoying there's nothing else to report. System doesn't appear to be suffering from any major slowdowns although I have noticed a few times if I am opening up one of my other hard drives, it takes a lot longer to open them up and display their contents than normal.

Any advice appreciated.

*EDIT* Forgot to mention, running Vista Ultimate 32 and its up to date with all MS updates.

In order to access Resource View, you must be a member of the local Administrator group or launch the tool using 'Run As". To start Resource View:

Click Start, right-click on Computer, and click Manage then expand System Tools and click Reliability and Performance. Reliability and Performance Monitor will start with the Resource View display.

Or you can click on Start \ Run and type perfmon /res in the run box.

Once opened, click on Disk to expand the view for all Disk activity.

Tried that when I had Task Manager opened up and was checking in there m8, can't pinpoint anything in there that tallies up with the disk activity interval.

*EDIT Although OUTLOOK.EXE could be a possible?.

Also, after enabling Avast's On Access Protection I'm getting Avasts Outlook MS Exchange Plugin box popping up exactly when this disk activity happens and vanishing as soon as the disk activity stops :-

So I opened Outlook 2007 up and had it sat there on the desktop. The rythmic disk activity stopped and no Avast message flashes up.

As soon as I close Outlook 2007, the disk activity starts up again and the message begins flashing up on screen again too.

The defrag scheduler is unticked so I don't think its that.

Just ran a HijackThis scan, here's the log :-

Hmmm.

A system restore to a date last week appears to have cured this annoying problem.

That said, would have been interesting to find out what was actually causing it if anything for future reference.
