How do I find the Ip address of a switch?

I have bought a 24 port switch on MM

I can connect my network to it and it works but I can't access the web interface to manage it.

I have tried netscan and it won't find the switch Mac address.

Would the switch still work if it was not in my IP address range?

Please help

What switch is it? And yes, it would still forward frames at layer 2 even if its layer 3 management IP was on a different subnet :)

Might be easiest to factory reset the unit, and check the user manual for default management IP.

If its a business grade unit perhaps it has a console port?

I don't know how to factory reset it

The default in the manual is 192.168.1.1
 
I assume you've tried sticking a host in one of the ports with an address like 192.168.1.2/24 and going to the address you stated?

I imagine there will be a reset button on the back of the unit, press and hold that for 10-15 seconds to wipe it.
 
Yes tried that

I assigned my laptop 192.168.1.2 and connected it to the switch

I typed in 192.168.1.1 and nothing

There is no button on the unit :(

Is there no software that can can scan and see eveything on the network even layer 3?
 
AngryIP scanner will do it but you'll need to be on the right subnet, if you do all the private address ranges you should find it. 10.0.0.0/8 might take a while..

I'm unsure what this means?

I do I get on the right subnet?

I don't mind leaving it running

what would I type?
 
it has an RS232 management port on the front.

Also, can you not ask it's previous owner what the details of the beastie are?
 
Plug host in to switch, set it's IP to 10.0.0.3, netmask 255.0.0.0.

Run AngryIP scanner, set range 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255.. hit scan and wait.

If no joy try the same for 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (netmask 255.240.0.0)
and
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (255.255.0.0)

I have emailed him...Just waiting for a reply...I spoke with him on the phone and he was helpful saying that he would post out a USB to serial lead for me.

I don't have a PC with a serial port:(

Thanks mate I will give this a go with my laptop tomo
 
I used to reset these for work about 5 years ago, from what I can remember we used to console in using hyper-terminal and default it from there.

I should still have the notes at home some where.

By the look of the switch does anyone have a cable I could borrow to connect serial to USB adaptor?
