how do i fit this cooler

I wonder if there is any way to clamp the springs up while you get the screws in?
Might just be able to hold them up with pliers or something.

That sounds like a decent idea. Need to go raid the tool box but i think i got only 1 set of crappy pliers and the good ones i had are now rusted for some odd reason.

Its amazing how much of a pita a badly designed retention mechanism can be isn't it.

The whole problem is there's very little thread on the backplate, meaning to get the pressure you need its very difficult to get the screws in. If you can find a way to hold the springs off that should make life a little easier. ;)

Right i tried the pliers and its very hard to hold the springs up. Will try on the mobo in a minute, will let you know. Yes it is such a PITA...damn you coolermaster!

No such luck im afraid. Maybe i need more hands ;) . Just waay to hard to hold one side in place with that much pressure while doing the other side :(

After 2 hours of trying i still have not been able to do it. Just can't get the screws to make contact with thread on the mobo. The springs are unbelievably not "springy" and i have put them in a adjustable pipe grip and will leave them there for some while to compress them. Don't think it will work though.

Could you not just screw the screws and springs into the motherboard without the HSF to compress them? This might give you enough compression to get them in with the HSF on.

Hello thank you for the reply!

I have tried that, when i do it and then take them out they just recoil back to their previous size..:(

What about cable tieing it down? Take off the backplate and cable tie that ***** tight?

I done it on a Northbridge cooler, not really sure if I should recommend this lol.

Bad idea, same as removing the springs completely. You end up with nothing pushing it down which might be ok for a north bridge but not for a cpu. As soon as the board flexes a bit or things heat up and expand you'll run into problems. The heatsink needs to be constantly pushed onto the cpu.

I believe your options are:
-Send the case and cooler back, its got rubbishy cooling anyway... do you really need it to be this small?
-Cut a ring or two off the springs or buy some smaller springs.
-Buy some longer screws.

I would go for the longer screws. Just pop down to your local diy store and get some m3 or m4 screws (take the old ones with you and see what size they are). Then test fit the new longer screws and chop enough off the bottom that they won't stick out of the back of the board too far but there is enough thread to get them on with the tight springs. That won't void the warranty either.

Could you not screw risers into the mobo's holes, then fix these screws to it?

cheers guys for all your help.

I don't have any risers, i might pop down to the diy store if the springs do not compress slightly when i check the grip this evening.

yay

i got it on!

Here is what i did..

Screwed in one side slightly so that the whole HSF was at a 45 degree angle to the mobo/cpu socket. Then i put quite abit of pressure on the otherside to bring it down, then i pushed quite hard to get the other screw in and then i tightened it from there. Took a lot of pressure  Felt right, hope i haven't broken anything.

Thanks guys!

Glad you managed to get it on in the end :)
Thankfully those cpus can take some pressure. ;)

Cheers!

Was such a PITA to fit it though, grrr.

Now my HTPC is complete apart from the fact i need my ram..which should come soon :D
