How do I fix my Amazon Fire TV?

I fired up my Amazon Fire TV box for the first time in some months yesterday and it went through an update cycle and stuck on the Amazon logo. I left it overnight and this morning it said something like 'failed to mount /mnt/cache'. I've looked at the ifixit teardown and it looks like there's no drive to replace (though my model is the 2015 version).

Can I fix it or should I just replace it?

I can't say I've fixed a firestick and it sounds like its a software issue which you can try and google your issue. Just google 'failed to mount /mnt/cache' and see what comes back. However this might be a good reason to upgrade your firestick to something newer or 4k version (better / faster CPU) and they are relatively cheap now compared to what they were several years ago.

Nothing useful. Hence my asking here. It's not responding to the remote at all so I cannot reset it. Powering off and back on does nothing: it just sticks at the Amazon logo (in white if that's relevant).

If you complain to Amazon that it broke after an update, they will either offer you a replacement device or offer you a gift card refund on your account for the original amount paid, assuming you bought it from them. It happened with a couple of boxes I have dealt with, both recently as well one was my father-in-laws and the other an old one I had that was a backup.

I would def do this. Give it a go first before trying to fix it. You can usually connect to it via developer mode to do a firmware restore.

Duly noted. I've not given up yet.

How do I enable developer mode remotely? It's got an ethernet port so can I telnet into it if the port is up? My router says it has an IP address but it's not responding to telnet or http on the standard ports. Nor does it respond to ping.

Is it one of the ones with a USB port?
If so have you tried a mouse if the remote doesn't work?

You unplugged the power, plugged the mouse, or keyboard, in, and then powered it up?
