how do i fix this text?

hi guys, just bought a macbook today, and the fonts in firefox and safari and in general seem a little wrong. the smoothing setting is set to "automatic"

how do i get it to smooth nicely in finder (doesn't look quite right, is it?), and also fix the blurryness in firefox and safari.

other than this i love my new macbook and im getting 2gb of ram tomorrow

Is this your first Mac? That's what text anti-aliasing looks like. It looks fine here, bear in mind that Firefox on the Mac looks like crap - there's much better browsers if you can live without extensions.

i can indeed live without extensions, can't live without tabbed browsing and F6 to select address bar though.

it is my first mac is there anyway to turn it off then? would it work if i upped the min font size in the appearence tab? or if i changed the AA to light?

Basically Apple's font smoothing keeps it as original looking as possible. Windows cleartype aims to make it easier to read.

I agree with the above - Firefox doesn't look quite right on OS X and the UI has been ported straight from Windows. Safari is a better experience and is faster. The other option is to go half and half and use Camino which has the Gecko layout engine with a proper Mac interface. Unfortunately not all websites display properly with Safari, so sometimes I'm back in Camino/Firefox.

You'll likely get used to the font smoothing in a couple of days - I did.

I used to prefer Cleartype, but the Mac system grew on me.

Chuck a well designed website at Safari (eg http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk) and it's almost print like. Looks kinda clunky on Windows.

hmm, dunno. cant try that on mac atm (it is sleeping aww!) but it is still perfectly readable on windows. will try camino though.

Keeps Firefox looking OS-Xish and then if you tweak it you can get it running super fast (Tweaks over at http://tweakguides.com)
