how do i format a sata drive

i have windows xp already on my sata harddrive ( sata drive is just set up as a normal ide drive) i have changed my motherboard so i want to format my sata hard drive and reinstall windows xp again, motherboard Asus p5w64, i thought this was going to be simple but i have put the windows cd into the drive set the drive in bios as first boot but it just goes straight through to windows and wont let me format it, i then tried making a sata driver floppy then set it at first boot but that wont let me format either or i am using the wrong command

hmm you cant boot to a sata drivers disk

press f8 at the post screen and it should then give you the option to
select what device you want to boot from
