Currently using Sky for my broadband and I get a different IP more or less every time I turn the PC on.

I want to get access to the server at work, but need to put my IP into the firewall, but obviously keeps changing.

Phoned Sky and they don't offer static IPs. Is there anything out there that I can do keep it fixed?

oddjob62, you'd use dyndns if you were trying to accomplish the opposite, i.e. connect to a home computer (with oft-changing IP address) from work.

You can stay connected longer. It shouldn't change each time you "turn the PC on" unless you're talking about the IP the router gives the PC, which you certainly can make static.

Thanks chaps

It's the IP I route out on the internet with. My PC has a static IP, but when I route out on to the internet I get a different one. (Checked using - www.whatsmyip.org) and it's this IP I need to put into the firewall.

And that's the one that changes occasionally when I boot up PC. I turn the router off at the wall at nights, so that's likely what's giving me a new one each time.

Don't switch the router off at night then, and see if the IP address remains for long enough to make it workable. The IP address doesn't change when you switch on your PC, at all.

Well if they're proposing just allowing traffic from your IP through that's a fairly poor solution anyway, get them to set up a VPN and do it properly...

And yes, there's no way you can get a static IP if your ISP doesn't offer them...unless you wanted to use IPv6 in which case you can set up a tunnel and get a static subnet from he.net but likely that isn't much help to you.
