How do I get fresh XP install to connect to Internet through router?

Microsoft site says it detects it automatically, it doesn't.

Been through each of the options in the network setup wizard, most I can get ia wee icon in my taskbar saying 1394 connection, speed 400.0 Mbps but Internet Explorer has no connection, there is no packets sent or received.
 
are u using wireless or a cable.

I just done this on sunday, plugged in my ethernet cable and clicked on explorer and it was away
 
Go to Network Connections

if you don't have an ethernet connection listed / available, then install network drivers

then it'll work
 
Install the drivers.

Right click on my computer > properties > hardware tab > Device manager

Check to see what items have yellow exclamation marks, chances are the ethernet adapter is one of them.
