here we go...

hardware i have:

RJ45 patch leads
1 4 port 10/100 router

2 computers:
comp1 - 10/100 and 1 10/1000
comp2 - 2 10/1000

what im wanting to do is have them both sharing the internet directly from the router

comp 1 is going to be my server which holds music and other files

comp2 will be my main computer for gaming etc. if i connect them both to the router the transfers rates will be slow.

is there anyway that i am able to use a crossover cable to connect the 2 computers directly together using the gb ethernet ports and set it up so that it will only use the gb for transfering information to and from and not via the router

red - 10/100
blue - gb

you get the idea

you could buy a cheap gigabit hub/switch and connect them both to that, then the hub/switch to your internet router.

saves any complex (more than plug and go) network configuration.

Alex.

Use a completely different ip range for the secondary network cards, then edit the hosts file on each machine to point the name of the two machines to the ip addresses of the network cards. Don't setup a gateway address on the crossover network cards.

Then when you browse to each machine it will go over the secondary cards via the crossover cable.

Used to do this all the time in the datacenter with web servers that needed fast connections to the database servers.

Ok connect the router to both pc for internet, then on the other network cards set IP example 1.0.0.1(gaming pc) and 1.0.0.2 (server PC) and connect it via crossover cable.

use the "setup network" on windows or if ** running a server u prolly have FTP server, u can use the gaming pc n FTP software to access files (this should be fast)

thanks for the info guys!! i havnt actually got my new system fully up and running, RAM will be here on monday all being well. ill get back if i run into diffs!

you could also bind windows file and print sharing to just 1 network interface. Never tried that though might not work.

i have my network setup as follows:

on the 10/100 network i disabled file and printer sharing (as advised by Clarkey) and it seems to be working fine
