How do I make my system quieter?

Hi,

Right now my system is a little louder than I would like. So I was wondering what I should do to decrease the noise level of it. My setup is below,

E7200 (@stock) with an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro cooler
Antec Sonata 3 (with 500W earthwatts PSU)
HD4850 (@stock)
Hiper 120mm Case Fan (20dBA, 59CFM)

The case is running with the standard 120mm case fan for exhaust and the Hiper as intake running over the hdd's.

So what do people feel is the best thing to change on the setup? The cpu is at 62C and the gfx card is at 83C whilst just on desktop by the way.

Blimey man nuts temps for stock.

Even though everyone always harps on about how quiet the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 is I actually find it quite loud. Also, what fan has the 500W earthworks PSU got in it? If it is anything below the size of a 120mm its gonna be whiney. Likewise, your 4850 is a noisy bugger unless you override fan control through ATi CCC and set to 40%. Lastly, have you seen the TFC Noise Absorbers for 120mm fans? They are these cheap little bits of fan sized rubber shrouds that stop the fans from making contact with the case thus, sound cannot propogate through the chassis as much. I would look at all of these points and see if you can make any improvements.

Regards

Tom

OK just checked out the PSU you probably wanna grab a better one TBH. Depends whether you have the money to burn or not...

The OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W is silent as a whisper and OcUK are doing a fantastic price on it atm. Plus its modular...

From the sounds of things it's probably your GFX card and PSU which are the main contrbutors to the overall noise level. I just checked our your case and its branded as being silent so presumably it isn't this (I have no exp of the Antec Sonata range myself).

Hope this helps!

Very hot little box. Change fans, softmount hard drives. Change psu fan if practical, change psu if not. Underclock cpu and gfx card to reduce the heat you have to dissipate.

Which bit is loudest at the moment? Work that out, then make that part as quiet as you can. Repeat until credit card / missus tells you you've gone too far :)

Best thing for me to do would be add a 240 radiator, and move things around internally so I can get the side cover back on :)

hughythomas,
Not looking at spending that much, just was wanting to improve the noise levels without spending a crazy amount, say nothing over £50.

doiks14,
Speedfan and ati ccc.

JonJ678,
All fans are softmounted, as well as hard drives. Not wanting to underclock the cpu and gfx card, I am not that desparate!

I have some MX-2 paste so may try reseating the cpu cooler and see if the temps improve.

It can be a combo of the cpu fan and gfx I think, especially the gfx card after playing a game.

Those CPU temps are definitely not normal... check if the heatsink is fitted properly..
as for making it more quiet.. those stock hsf for HD 4850 are really noisy over 60% fan speed. So you might want to use some sortware to set it at around 40% fan speed on windows and around 80% when on games..
Arctic Freezer 7 pro is pretty quiet at 50% fan speed, thats how my fan speed is set right now, and I can't hear it as the HDD's are the noisiest part of my PC.

Resistor in series would do it nicely, but would mean bad things for cpu temperatures. What're load temps like? Loud graphics card is pretty difficult to solve :(

there is something wrong here i have the same case with no front intake and getting mid 30's on CPU at idle with a lot of volts through my cpu. I do have a tuniq tower on but i wouldnt expect it to make a 30 degree difference

Yer, think we're all in agreement saitrix you need to reseat your cpu cooler!!!

Also grab a 3rd party air cooler for your 4850 and you'll be ready to rock (albeit in a quiet, amps turned to 0 sorta way).

Well I might be being very dim here but I have 4 temps on speedfan.

Temp 1 = 53C
Temp 2 = 44C
Core 0 = 62C
Core 1 = 63C

Now I quoted the core temp. I am guessing the lowest temp is the one on the motherboard for the system temp. Is temp 1 a cpu temp aswell then?

Core 0 and core 1 are both cpu sensors, one for each core. One of the other two might be graphics card, otherwise I'd guess one is northbridge and the other is a sensor on the board somewhere. Motherboard manual would know best, if you're lucky. 62 does seem high for idle, but with a hot graphics card next to it I'm not that surprised.
