How do I make my system quieter?

Just found I was still running higher voltages to stock, hense the temps! I am now down to 55C but with the fan running much slower.

Probably been mentioned, but the ACF7 is REALLY loud. I'd get shot of that if your wanting things to be quiter. Get yourself a true, noctua etc for uber quiet and coolness!

TRUE is not a good cooler for quietness (low airflow), get a Xigmatek s1283 or HR-01+ instead. :)

Sorry but I have to disagree. With the right fan, the TRUE is a great silent cooling solution. I run mine with a Noctua NF-P12 and with my Q6600 @ 3.6ghz 1.43v my temps running Prime95 Small FFT's max out at 69c.

It's only loud at high fan speed. What RPM do you have it running at, saitrix? I'd class it as quiet below 1500rpm and silent below 1200.

I'm not saying it's bad but there are better heatsinks out there for low-airflow rigs, where the fans are 600rpm or less...

Thermalright TRad2 + NF-12S is near silent on my 4850 XXX and doesn't go above 60 deg.

Do that, and reseat the cooler with just a thin sliver of MX2, I reckon that'll sort ya.

[email protected] [stock] with Noctua cooler is sitting at average 40 over all the cores with 25% load, GPU is at 53 - currently running F@H GPU.

You should be as cool as that with an AC7 really, the Noctua cools just as well but with less noise at medium-high speed.

Mattus,
I run it between 1200 and 1400rpm, so yes it is quiet. In games I run it slightly higher.

StevenRaith,
Sounds good that, will get either the TRad2 or the Accelero S1, with either I will strap a silent 120mm fan to it, most probably a Yate Loon as they are cheap enough. Think at the same time I will swap the rear fan in my case which is a stock Antec one for a Yate Loon.

Is this a decent silent psu?

Have you tried stopping each fan in turn to see which one is the loudest?

No point spending ~£80 replacing the PSU if yours is quiet already, to find you still need to replace other fans.

I'd HIGHLY recommend an Accelero S1 v2 cooler for your 4850 - I have one on my 8800GT passively, never gets over 55C when doing lots of work, and idles around 40C.

Try getting a Zalman fanmate as well - for £3.50 you cant really go wrong, and use it to slow the speed of your fans down, you can test it on any that have 3 pin connectors and then leave it on the fan of your choice.

I built a PC for the M-in-Law based around a E7200 with an ACFP7. The case had decent ventilation but at one point temps (ASUS PC Probe) were 80C-90C!

I reseated and repasted (AS5) the cooler but temps were still in the 60s. So I bought an Akasa TX-965 cooler (cheap, quite cool and quite quiet - like the Freezer Pro 7) and Temps are now down to late 40s idle and late 50s under sustained load. I figured it's just a warmish chip...

The TRUE has a narrow fin spacing to maximise surface area. But this means it needs more pressure to pus the air through it. Fortunately the P12 is a high pressure fan that mitigates this, however...

Like the HR-01 Plus - which is very similar to the TRUE (unsurprisingly) - but with a much wider fin spacing, like the Scythe Ninja et al.

So if you compare identical systems with a TRUE + P12 and a HR-01 Plus + P12, you will find:

At full fan speed, the TRUE will be slight cooler and slightly noisier (air passing through the narrow fin gaps makes more noise).

At lower fan speeds (9v, 7v, 5v), the TRUE will be warmer and noisier because of the lower airflow.

This little sub-debate is a repeat of the following thread.

It's worth checking out the Xigmatek s1283 if you can't get hold of the HR-01, as it also has wide fin spacing. :)

matt_fsr,

Yeah I have turned everything down, seems to be from the rear of the case, either the exhaust fan or the PSU. Looking at the specs in my case's manual the exhaust fan is still 25dB on its lowest setting! So I am thinking first of all I will try a better fan, I was thinking Yate Loon, are they good?

I am going to get an Accelero S1 I think, may try it passively at first, but it is tempting to just get a low speed fan and run it slow. As afterall the 4850 is meant to be a hotter gfx card.

cjmUK,
I think the first job is to reseat it to make sure it is properly on, also use better thermal paste this time round.

The ACFP7 was seated 3 times in all (with AS5 the second two times). The 965 also has AS5 on it (and not too much either) and is seated firmly. If these is a problem with that machine, it ain't with the HSF.

Sounds like you've found the answer then - run your case with that fan off, see what it does. If its hard-wired in, cut wires ;)

Cant argue with 10dba noise rating! I'd have some of these if my case used any 80mm fans.

If there's any airflow at all over the Accelero it'll be fine - have you seen the SIZE of the thing?

Compare it to a normal size passive cooler:
http://fusionmods.net/reviewimages/arctic/accelero12.JPG

Oh sorry my exhaust fan is 120mm, same as the inlet fan for my case. So I guess this one?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-001-NC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

Haha you can't really tell the size of the cooler until you see a pic like that. So I will get a new exhaust fan and an accelero s1. I will also look into any modifications I can do to the case to quieten it down plus of course resit my cpu cooler with some mx-2 paste.

Finally if it still isn't quiet then I bet my psu isn't helping.

Just stop the exhaust fan, graphics card fan and CPU fan in turn and see which is making the noise. If it's none of them, it's the PSU.

Mattus,
Will do. :)

MikeHunt79,

Inlet 120mm fan = 1200rpm
Exhaust 120mm fan = 950rpm
CPU cooler fan = 1450rpm

I think I am going to make a shoud to go between the PSU and the rest of the pc, just feeling now I can feel hotter air coming out of the psu fan than the exhaust fan. So as my psu is only an 80mm fan, I would be better to have the hot air being exhausted by the 120mm exhaust fan. Plus I suppose it will give better flow over the cpu cooler. Also I bet blowing straight onto a grill isn't good for noise, so I am thinking about cutting the grill of the rear of my pc. I never touch around there when it's on anyways.
