Just built a shuttle SG33G5 with a C2D E2140

The fan that cools the CPU seems to be a bit load. Can I use speedfan to monitor the temps and control the fan? Or should I just get a better cooler?

Any recommendations greatly recieved!

Nice reply! But this may not quieten it much!

Why I hear you ask?! Because if the cooler is working at max to keep the CPU cool then a new fan, just because it is slightly quieter, will be just that, slightly quieter!

Was more looking for people who know of any larger CPU coolers I could fit so the fan does not have to work as hard to keep me temps down.

You may have just said 'Water cool it mate' or 'Put it in the fridge!'

You can buy a fan that has a good CFM but also a very low dba. That way you get great cooling at a lower noise output. Checkout the fan section. Some good ones there.

Don't know if the SG33G5 is anything like the SK41G, but you could use tin-snips to cut out the grill on the back.. bit drastic but it would lower the fan noise considerably.

'Considerably'? I suspect from 2-3ft away you wouldn't notice any diff... Anyone tried it?

well you could spend money on un-necessary fans or you could just Click this link and download offical XPC Tools that is designed to control the fan speeds of all case fans connected to the motherboard in your shuttle.

you know, totally up to you, but makes more sense to do what you said in the OP.

yes you can as i did exactly that. can just set min and max temps and it sorts itself out.

LOL! Seriously the Nexus fan took my Shuttle from basically unbearable, to relatively quiet... For £6 is was a damn good investment...

Not unnecessary IMHO! I suspect not for anyone who actually speaks from experience...

ps: My bios is/was already set to run the fan as slowly as possible!

i fail to see how my post was funny but ok... and whilst you can set one of 4 profiles in the bios (maybe be different in the SG's but thats what my SN had) , you can set the fans between 0 and 100% in XPC Tools so that you can get the best cooling to noise ratio.

my shuttle ran near silent with both ICE In and ICE out fans running at around 1600rpm (manually set in XPC Tools)

i was just trying to save him money when there isnt a need to spend any. sure he CAN if he WANTs to but doesnt HAVE to.

I'll vouch for speedfan, the only time that I would say you need to modify the fans on a shuttle is if you are either overclocking or running at 100% CPU all the time or both.

Can only speak for my case and fan, and back up what other people have found... The standard fan (at least on this model) was terrible, to the extent it had a loud droning quality to it. A £6 replacement (sitting in the unit next to me now) means the cooling fan is very quiet, leaving just the PSU fan as the main source of noise...

I think I tried XPC tools and failed to get it to get it to control/mod my fan. All I could do was set the cooling modes in the BIOS (eg: smart fan)...
