Basically the PC is playing up a bit so i reckon i need a fresh install to get rid of all the junk.

Problem is that i started off with windows 98, then bought XP upgrade (early version).

When i put in XP upgrade disc i get message telling me it won't install as a newer version is on the PC. It says i can reformat by restarting the PC and booting from XP disc. I've tried doing this by leaving XP upgrade disc inCD drive and restarting but nothing happens!

Help!!!!

I don't think you can use an upgrade version as a fresh install, at least not with XP so your options would therefore appear to be to install 98 and then XP again or to buy a new OS (either XP or Vista probably).

What he said. Boot from win98 CD, it'll give the option to format when you install. Then upgrade as before.

Even if you did manage to format using the upgrade disk, you won't be able to install XP cos it's only an upgrade!

Thanks for replies. I'm now sorted. Went into bios and set it to boot from CD, restarted with disc and away she went!

Surprisingly, it did a complete reinstall from the XP upgrade disc. I thought it would ask me foe the windows 98 at some stage but didn't. Activated and validated with no probs.

It is a genuine disc, but its definately the upgrade.

Anyways, alls well that ends well.

Mind you, its a pain downloadind all the updates and re-installing drivers!!!
