Hiya guys and gals,

I'm about to pick up a second 74Gb Raptor so I can run them in RAID 0. The HDDs will be used for Windows Vista and games, all other data will be stored on other drives.

How do I set them up as RAID 0? My motherboard has RAID capability, so I assume I need to plug them into the relevant sockets first, but then what? Do I need to completely reformat my system, or will it be able to set it up automatically?

Cheers,

Jed.

It's a complete reformat and re-install I'm afraid:

  • Disconnect the data drives and hook up the two Raptors to a pair of the RAID capable SATA ports
  • Go into the system BIOS and ensure that the SATA controller that the Raptors are on is set to RAID mode
  • Reboot then go into the RAID BIOS when prompted, the keystroke required depends on the controller
  • Set up the RAID0 array - your motherboard manual will have the details
  • Reboot again and head back into the main BIOS, check that the DVD drive is set as the first boot device followed by the RAID array
  • Chuck in the Vista DVD and boot to the DVD
  • Head through the installer as normal, depending on the controller it may not need any storage drivers although the likes of P35 based boards will do since they're so new
  • Complete the install and load chipset drivers, updates etc as normal.

I was pleasantly surprised that I didnt need any for my X38 board :O)
