How do I setup a wireless adapter?

Using WinXP can someone help me setup a wireless adapter... the drivers are installed and the unit seems to be picking up the several wireless access points in the area but for some reason I cannot use it to access the internet...

What do I need to do?

I take it you'll be wanting to connect to your access point?

Connect to YOUR access point and make sure your IP, subnet mask and gateway addresses are correct.

Its not mine, im advising a friend and they want to set it to roam through the several access points in their house

The access points will all need to have the same SSIDs and Encryption keys.

Step by step guys, I dont know the first thing about wireless networking... isn't there a way to get the computer just to connect to any available open connection?

If so, how is this achieved and how do I inform the computer to use the wireless connection for internet?

What wireless points are they, and how many are there? It's possible you can setup seamless, otherwise you'll have to use each point on a different channel.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, she's a technophobe and I don't know enough about wireless networks to set it up successfully yet...

There are about 3 wireless access points that are detected when she gets the thing working... she just wants to set it so that it connects to any of them and so she can get on the internet...

Ok, whats the location? is it a business or a home or something, and does she own the accesspoints/have legal access to them?

If she can't get access to configure the access points it won't work. They need to be set up for seamless or all in the same SSID on different channels, she then needs to be set up with the router/modem as gateway and connect to the SSID of any of the access points and the client software to be set to auto select the strongest signal.

home and yes, which is why I suggested allowing it to roam to any available access point for simplicity... she doesn't have neighbours so its doubtful anyone will attempt to use her access points other than her

are they all the same model of access point? if so, i'd google the manual and it should tell you how if they support it. It'll probably be easier than us giving you step by step shots in the dark.

Specific models will support WDS, which allows points to not only be independant from a wireless network, but also to be completely seamless, otherwise it will be channel hopping, but will still be ok for her needs.
