How do I throttle flatmate?

I'd recommend going gargoyle - get a netgear 3700 v1 or v2 then you can use the netgear interface to firmware update to gargoyle which incidentally uses openwrt.

If you want him to stop streaming so you can game then you can use its active congestion control (which I believe is unique) that ensures the link keeps a good ping regardless of the load.

If its a problem with how much he downloads gargoyle also has a quota system so you can set how much he is allowed in any period any more and it stops his Internet till the period is finished, you do also have various reports showing exactly how much is beng downloaded. If you search for gargoyle in this forum I did a more detailed report on it.

You will need a adsl modem as well.

Buy a cheap Cisco 1700 off the bay, add an ethernet WIC card to give you 2 Ethernet ports (the built in F/E port and the additional one) the routers can be picked up for around £9-12 off the bay second hand. Very good at throttling ;)

Draytek router will also let you limit bandwidth pretty easily! I did the same at a place I shared :D

Rather than throttling the bandwidth you could also just block streaming/P2P stuff which should achieve what you want hehe

Blocking p2p is quite difficult as they tend to use a lot of ports, just get a reasonable router that can handle it and he'll be fine. For the first time in years I can play without being effected by the others in my networks activities

Sounds like he knows its a problem and "forgets".

I'd disconnect him next time it happens and not reconnect him for 24hours, he needs to learn. Why should you go out and buy extra hardware because he is a free loader.

Or install something like netlimiter on his pc and let it run at 10-25% the max available bandwidth.

Or in answer to the original topic, hands round neck and squeeze hard!

Don't see why, if he's got a wired connection you can't just take some wire cutters to his cable lol

I'd be tempted to go down the route you ended up going down but the router will have to sit in the shared area of the house. The problem is that everyone but myself smokes, and quite heavily, this seems to kill any technology left in the shared area. Then again all the routers I've been looking at aren't cheap either. I would like to know more about the atom itx box you bought, I can't find anything that cheap.

Thanks again everyone.

I used a gigabyte atom 330 + some cheapo inwin itx case that came with a 150w mini psu.
Dropped in a 40gb sata hdd from a ps3 upgrade and a gig of ddr2 + pci gig-e nic I had lying around.

If you look at the atom d525/510 you can find them for very reasonable amounts (£45-65) but I did get a very good deal on my purchase, the newer, lower power & slightly faster d2700/2500 are starting to show as well.
All you need is the ability to have 2x lan, usually onboard + pci nic.

ITX cases with power supply can be had for £20-25. Elgoog is handy.

Ah know this situation all too well :| I had to resort to threats of physical violence to finally get the point across after months of being reasonable about it despite paying for the connection myself.

simply disconect him untill he agrees to anything you say regarding internet usage.
if he genuinly needs the internet shouldnt take long then say if you break your agreement he will have to do without net for a set amout of time say 24 hours or more.

saves you buying hardware wich you shouldnt have to if hes getting the internet for free

Yup agree and the reason he forgets is because you never follow up your own threats by the sound of it, harsh but ture thats makes it worse :)
