how do i update a ftp base website

as title says i have been asked to update a website but its a little confusing, mainly just picturse and news storys nothing major

i have downloaded smartftp and ftp commander which has just baffled me with folders lol any advice greatly appreiated
 
1. FTP software enables you to connect to remote server (the server which holds your website and hosts it on the www)

2. to connect to the remote server you need:- a) hostname usually a I.P address b) username b) password

3. Once you connect to the remote server using your username and password it will automatically show you all the files that make up your website i.e. aboutus.html / contact/html / index.html plus others

4. You need drag and drop the files you want to amend to a location on your PC and then amend them.

5. once files have been amended overwrite them on your server

Make sure you create a backup of the files on your PC and then make another copy that you change if you are going to overwrite them on the server, nothing wors than hosing the whole thing and not having a backup.
 
cheers for the replies, do you guys have any tuts for HTML as i am a complete novice but it needs to be done
