How do I use these speakers with my PC?

Hi, I have some 5.1 surround sound home cinema speakers that I used to use with my DVD player but now I want to use them with my PC.

Here is a photo of the back of the sub -

Now how would I go about connecting these to my PC?

I thought about buying a 5.1 sound card then it would still only be the small 3.5mm single connectors rather than the double hifi style ones which my sub has.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to PC audio stuff.

Any help will be appreiciated.

Cheers, Ed.

There are converters available to convert 3.5 stereo socket to double L/R coaxial sockets / connectors (as in pic), you can then connect these to the left of the sub in your pic, which I believe are audio ins.

So you will need 3 of these converters either from auction site or your local Ma****s, one for FL / FR, another one for RL / RR, and the last one for centre / bass. Not sure about the centre & base connections though, they may be on different 3.5 outputs on a 5.1 sound card so in that case you need another converter.

Perhaps someone more experienced in 5.1 can clarify this.

Not sure where you'd buy them, but you should be able to get a 3.5 cable with double coax output. My Amp is similar to yours, and I have a cable that comes out of the PC soundcard into the back of the amp.

heya, you would connect your speakers up to your amp like you would your dvd player.

you would then use a Y splinter (red and white, left and right) from your front audio into your front input amp. and then do the same for the back connection, using a Y splinter again.

You would tehn select 5.1sound on your amp, and there u go... o and make sure windows is configured for 5.1 sound in control panel.

//looking at your screenshot again, u need to get 2 Y splinters, or can u use that wire u have at the moment, but u need to get an adaptor which goes from 2 to 1. the opposite connections of a normal Y splinter. if u get me?

Just sorting out the accidental double posting.

I'm still a bit confused, can anyone link me to one of these 2 to 1 things?

Cheers, Ed.

you will need something like this

stereo_plug_cable.jpg

available from most electronics type stores, like the one beginning with M and ending in ins :)

That store isn't a competitor though is it? seeing as it seels mainly electrical components and overclockers don't sell audio cables.

I think wilko's sells them, have a look there. Should be a lot cheaper than most places too. I'm 90% confident i bought mine from wilko's.

They also sell computer components so i guess they would be a competitor, though why anyone would buy components from them is beyond me!

Ok, I can't seem to locate these cables on m*****s or an auction site, but I'm not sure exactly what to search for, if it is a product that OcUK doesn't sell that it must be ok to post a link?

I'm also a bit concerned about what Steve said about the centre speakers and the subwoofer being different connections on the back of the sound card.

Cheers, Ed.

search for 3.5mm to phono jack

you can get ones either with just a 3.5mm male (bit sticking out) headphone like bit, directly connected to 2 phono female (hole) bits. This way you have to use a 2phono male to 2phono male wire.

Or you can get a 3.5 mm male then a long wire to 2 phono male plugs. This one goes directly from sound card (or mp3, player cd player etc) to you stereo auxilery output. I have the second.

edit -for you I see you have a 2 phono to 2 phono cable already so a 3.5mm male to 2phono female is all thats required. These cost about 50p - £1 (if that)

Ok, I have located some on the auction site now so I'll buy 3 and just give it a try! Cheers, Ed.
