Most business 'bootstrap' at first I.E Do it yourself, they might get some revenue which you can hire contractors or something.
As you grow you might be able to talk to angel investors, or bring in some full-time employees maybe with some equity. You don't necessarily need to be a super star business to get funding, they just want a return or a major sell out. I worked at a business park, and some businesses which got vc funding were pretty lame to be honest. Just the directors knew how to talk crap to get the investors in. A lot failed though.
Then eventually you either sell, go public(in your dreams), or keep the business for cash flow.
