I'm not asking because I want to, more out of intrique.

My parents split up and I was forced to move out, begin working in order to own my own place. No complaints whatsoever. Yet, even at 24, I know people not working - through benefits, sponging off parents etc.

I was wondering how else people do this, and if anyone has any stories on this?

Last year I didn't work for 6 months as I was on gardening leave from my employer. Fully paid, all I had to do was answer any technical questions they had via e-mail or phone.

They're happy to play the system, sponge or live on sod all money.

This,

I lived on JSA quite a while, however it does suck. You have ZERO money to really do anything at all. And I mean literally none.

For a lot of people they couldn't stand it, for some they are like meh and would rather not work or do temp work here n there.

Each to their own...

Just because someone is on JSA doesn't mean they aren't working, any number of them are. So they have JSA, rent, council tax etc paid plus a cash in hand wage. They do very very well out of it.

If i had the money to, i wouldn't work so, long as i could fund a hobby.

Also, drugs. It would be easy sitting around high all day off of tax payers money. Everyone knows a doobie give the user -1000 willpower.

If you're a single male you're screwed as on benefits you can only get JSA and limited housing benefit of about £35 pw. It's if your disabled or have kids that you win the benefits game, housing benefit, Disability Living Allowance, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Income Support, council tax paid, free dental and school meals.

Some people cannot afford to work as benefits pays them more than they would be able to earn by selling their labour on the open market.

This can't be true as everyone knows if you are on benefits you have 50" plasma TV's, full sky TV packages and multiple XBox 360's/Playstations and go on 3 holidays a year...

according to the Overclockers Uk forums...

If you're a bit anxious and feel a bit under the weather then register as disabled and even get a free car! Motability scheme FTW!

Most are lazy (they see dole as a career option like mum and dad used it), some are doing it as they have no choice due to redundancy

These threads are pointless.

You get the toffs screaming "kill the peasants".
The peasants scream "**** you".
Some try and broker a peace deal.
Peace falls apart cause some snotty school kid keeps yapping away about things way over his head.
Thread gets closed.

Crack on.

Some struggle to find a job, others are simply lazy.

I've been in the second category for the last year, no longer though :)

I don't think I'll ever understand how people can do that - Just bumming around, living off benefits - Doesn't sound like a good life to me... but some people love it.
