How do these compare ?

how do you want to compare them? The 9600 will perform better, the 9400GT will be quieter and use less power. Also presumably the 9400 is cheaper :)

haha oh dear, sorry :D yea was thinking NVidia 9600. Well, the 9400GT will have a better featureset and should perform better than ATi's 9600, also it'll be quieter.

What are you intending to use it for?

Phew just play the occasional game nothing special. my card is quite old so I thought a new should be more powerful.

Whilst you're right in most cases, the 9400GT is a dire card. For the same price as a 9400GT you could bag a second hand x1950pro, possibly even a 2900XT.

If you have a specific budget, we'll be able to find you a much better card than the *spit* 9400GT :)

Probably worth going for the 4850 if you can, but be aware that it'll likely be overpowered if you're running a system with AGP support. Also check PSU requirements.

How does my 9600 compare ?

I reckon the 9400GT is over 5 times faster than the radeon 9600.

However, the 9400GT is not an ideal card - what is your budget?

Also, what is your planned usage and make/model of your power supply?

If it's 5 times faster I'm not bothered my psu is a passive Silverstone 300 Watt one :) very expensive too :o and I've broken some of the power connects.
