How do you feel about walking through a field of cows?

Cows are generally pretty placid, just quite inquisitive. They'll usually come towards you, probably as they associate people with food. If I've got the dog with me I'll skirt around the outside of the field and if they have calves I'll avoid them, otherwise I've never had a problem.

And its people like you who just become another statistic. 6 people every year get killed by cows. 6!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nuke them from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

Dog and calves you have to watch out for otherwise its ok. They see dogs as predators so if they get riled let the dog go it can run a lot faster you than you or the cows for that matter. Takes a bit of courage to just walk through a field of them sometimes but they're rarely anything more than disinterested. I'm still in one piece. Funny story someone my mother knew used to be a farmhand and on a walk once in a field of cows for a laugh he whooped and hollered and had them running round and round the field. He thought it was hilarious but it scared the crap out of us. You can feel the ground vibrating when a herd of cows goes thundering past. They're big animals.

I was in a field in Scotland with someone and the many cows in it started running towards us and we started to run and we realised we weren't going to get over the fence before they ran us over. There were too many to go round the side of them. The person I was with turned and held their arms out and they all veered off and stopped. It was very scary until that point. I really don't think they were going to stop before getting to us, it was a real stampede. There weren't any calves or bulls among them.
I was quite a fit young person at that time, but a cow is faster than me.

''According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 74 people have been killed by cows in the past 15 years.'' 2015.

Been around cows on a dairy farm quite a lot when I was younger so I was never bothered by the beasts in the fields.
However I have been chased by a group of young cows, 1-2 year olds. I'd never hiked through the field before so I had it away on my toes. They were just curious, but I was out on my own and despite waving my arms about and yelling at them, they were determined to run after me. Little buggers.

If you don't know the animals it's best to exercise a little caution at the expense of your dignity and be prepared to leg it.

I'd be happy to walk across a field with cows in but as others have mentioned i'd be wary around any fencing or wall like objects - if one as unlikely as it may be decides it fancies running at you it wouldn't end well if you got smashed in to something.

Cows will move, they're fine, usually nothing to worry about.

The only problem I've had with cows is walking up Pentire from Polzeath (Cornwall) they were on the coastal path and there wasn't really anywhere for them to go and one was mooing in people's faces, which we later realised was protecting its calf.

Otherwise, get a big stick and gesture them out the way, they're docile.

Bulls on the other hand... They can be unpredictable.

Nothing wrong with being wary. Cows can get almost semi domesticated when they are constantly exposed to farmers etc

However with the modern way of farming there is actually quite considerably less exposure time so they are a lot more "wild".

Cows fine, just don't startle them or run (skirt round if they have calfs), if they approach I pick the dog up (live in country crossed fields with cows / calfs loads of times)

Cows may well approach you out of curiosity if you run they will also likely run, ive een "charged" a few times only for them to hit the breaks before me and just moo / cowvestigate me

Bulls on the other hand RLF better still don't enter the field, they are not supposed to be kept in fields with public foot paths in - I did some reading the field is their territory and they want you out of it if you stand your ground you get mashed!

bulls look slow however they can run faster than you!

Never again will I walk through a field of turbo charged moo moos's! When I was kid I loved one Isle of Man, and my friends decided to play football in a farmers field (stupid considering there was a football pitch 5 minutes away..) after about 20 minutes or so the, obvious happened the ball went astray and as I was the closest to the ball I went to get it, it landed relatively close to a few cows, as I approached they must got spooked and one ran in my general direction, I absolutely papped my self and legged it. They can shift!

Wouldn't do it. Cows can kill.

Seriously they are official the Uk most dangerous animals having killed 74 people in the last 15 years. Way more than all the dogs on the dangerous breed list.

In fact you are far more likely to be killed by a cow than a terrorist in the uk yet I don't see anybody doing enything about the cows like banning them flying in or putting them on watch lists

Cows don't chase after you then explode :D

70% of deaths involved either a bull or newly calved cow
The majority of victims by far are farm workers, with 56 of the 74 deaths from this group, while mostly lone walkers who had dogs made up the remaining 18 who had been killed
