How do you get into modelling?

I was approached on a street once.. went for an interview at an agency, and was told I could get some catalogue work if I wanted it.

...pity it included a 250 mile drive, and it sounded a bit too gay for me :(

My brother got into it by entering a compatition in a shopping centre. Other wise you could look up an agent and get some photos done. Some of the photographers will do so many for free if you mention them and let them put their names on them.

Stand outside Topshop Oxford St :o

Easier for men to get in than women I think. My friend has a mate who has done some work... but he only gets half day jobs etc and models round his day job.

Gordy is your man methinks ;)

Right you generally get started one of two ways...

The first is to be 'spotted'. As already pointed out Oxford Street is the place for that. I myself got spotted by an agent walking out of Burtons (iirc). He took a couple of snaps on his digicam, took my contact details and phoned me later that day offering me a portfolio shoot and the chance to be on their books.

Be careful here as a lot of agencies will expect you to pay for your portfolio shots. This isn't always such a bad thing but you need to be certain that you will make the money back quickly when you actually start working. Ideally, if they really are interested they will offer to do your portfolio for free, though from what I hear that is becoming more rare these days.

Once you have a portfolio and are on the books of an agency you will quite likely find other agencies will get an interest in you. This happened to me, I was contacted by another agency called "Eyecandy" and they asked to have me on their books. Although I don't accept jobs anymore I am still there for some reason. These are very old photos now from before I began working out but you can check it out if you're interested.

Other than getting 'spotted' the only other way is to do it yourself. Find yourself a studio or a freelance photographer and pay to have your own portfolio put together. Once you have this you can shop around agencies and ask to be put on their books.

Hope this helps. :)

Think he means gain `entry` to a female model through a flash sports car (like a mondeo) ;)

I'm very aware of what he meant :). And let's be honest, a Mondeo is not a 'real' car in this context ;).

a model's life is a precious commodity - they, too, can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

Have you ever thought there's more to life than being really really professionally good looking?

Male models usually need to be at least 6 foot tall and you need to have a certain build too. Not always about good looks, but you need the right facial features.

It depends what type of modelling really. For catwalk, males are usually expected to be between 5'11" and 6'2" with a chest not much larger than 42". For commercial modelling these numbers are much more flexible. For fitness modelling, height is pretty much irrelevant, it's all about your physique.
