I'm having a bloody nightmare with "Aero not working-copy not genuine" activation problem. Spent hours solving it to no avail and the idiot on the phone told me to reinstall Windows just to have the same problem again after using Auto Updates from M$.
Have done some research and found out that even if I install an AV software or firewall which overwrite Vista's core processes or a new driver Vista sees it as major changes in the system and make my copy not genuine.
How do you guys put up with all this crap from M$? I bought Vista Ultimate retail and have to phone them up whenever I install a firewall upgrade?

Get an illegal version of vista :D, no activation rubbish required. :p

No but seriously, pirates have a lot less trouble than genuine users, M$ doesn't seem to get there's a vista out there for downloading that passes every genuine advantage check with flying colours, needs no activation and doesn't whine about hardware changes: Pirates never had any trouble with the protection at all, while genuine users have to go through all kinds of trouble.

M$ should rethink it's protection system, as it doesn't help monkeys.

If I can't resolve this problem in a week time I'm going back to XP Pro (unless they fix the stupid activation method). M$ is really taking the **** this time, with all the brainies working why can't they come up with a much more effective activation process is beyond me.

You obviously have a problem with it somewhere, ive never had a problem with the Vista activation even when upgrading software / antivirus / firewall etc.

same with me on one of my rigs, no major issues with hardware (except a scanner). The other rig, well thats another story but thats down to asus being crap and not giving proper bios updates

The point with Vista with UAC greatly reduces Virus infection due to the the way the kernel is written, so you get a virus trying to write itself into your OS, UAC reduces this. Hence a lesser need for Virus software for Vista. Although as time goes on, Virus protection and Virus writting gets more indepth with Vista as an OS.... Protection Software houses have already said that Vista is a difficult OS to adapt to and turning off UAC greatly increases this...

Just a thought....

install vista without using your product key. you have 30 days grace and you can install/re-install whatever you like and also use windows updates. then when you're happy with the setup, enter your product key and activate it.

Id go with Marc2003's idea.

You dont need to activate it at all until 30 days time, or at least when you are happy that your PC is running right.

Also, have you htought that maybe your AV is simply not good for Vista?

Im using NOD32 and I know that AVG should be ok too... What AV are you trying to use?

Admittedly, I have not yet activated my copy of Vista ( x64 Ultimate FWIW ) and thats only because I keep trying it out and hating it and have done since I got the thing a few months ago, but this time it seems to be ok so far... I will activate it in a few more days perhaps?

All the big name AV packages work fine in Vista, I know because I've used them all and am settled with AVAST on Vista32.

As for a Firewall, if you have a router do not bother using a software firewall unless you are unsure if you're already infected or are unsure as to your browsing habits and possible inability to not open rogue attachments etc.

What I'm saying is some common sense and a decent AV is all you need if you have a router.

Or alternatively use Windows Firewall. It does make sense to have both a hardware and software firewall as the router is not going to block everything unless you have a pretty decent router (still better than nothing though!)

For Antivirus I currently have Symantec Corporate installed with no problems. No re-activations or anything. I simply installed my O/S (Vista Ultimate) installed all the updates and activated it. Up to now I have not been asked to reactivate it - though I did keep an image of it activated just incase I want to go back to a clean install.

vista is pish, the pirates have it best. No payment, no activation bs. Anyone got to the point where they going to throw in the towel with micrshaft and use a linux distro? :)

I feel sorry for people who pay for Windows only to find to can only do things x amount of time and feel like victims from MS while the real crooks aren't.

Ahoy!! Yo-ho-ho!!!

I must admit i feel like i'm being taken for a ride by M$ with Vista Ultimate blah why did i ever buy it. Ultimate extras hah that's a joke but i should have realized by now microshaft as someone put it are only out to make as much money as possible and rumor has it don't even employ an extras team anymore. I think a move to linux may be on the cards.
