I have looked around a fair bit and searched google but all the guides seem to use a c2d for their guide. So how do you go about protecting the pins on cpus prior to that chip? I fully understand how to lap now just worried about bending a pin or two.

Would be looking to do this to a X2 3800 Socket 939. The only way i can get my hands on a old cpu socket from a mother board would be to butcher my mates old one but don't think he would be too happy bout that :p. Do you think the case that the retail cpu came in would do? It has abit of sponge in it just wasn't sure on how much grip it would give you.

Simply spread superglue in a thick layer between the pins and wait for it to harden. This way your pins will never bend!

I wouldn't use sponge. I'd go for a block of polystyrene. But the potential for static electricity would scare me s**tless.
