Quick question, as above...

I'm having new carpet installed in the bedrooms and lounge in my flat which I want to preserve in the best possible manner. The floors are currently stripped back to the concrete. How do you protect carpet from caster wheels?

Cheers :)

Ikea do a floor protector for office chairs.

Will flatten the carpet in that area but will save it from the movement of wheels constantly.

You could just get a cut of carpet extra to put under the chair, maybe a piece of ply to secure it to. Will flatten the carpet underneath but a good carpet wash should bring it back up.

Did similar when my rental flat was being re-carpeted, just asked the guys for an offcut. When moving out, and after a professional carpet clean, it was good as new

Cheers guys. I'll ask the fitters what they can do for me WRT offcuts. There should be plenty as the carpet will be off a 5m roll and the bedroom which I shall be using as a study is smaller than that!

Also, if you just get an offcut it will be fine for a bit, but eventually the backing of the offcut will start to break down and leave a mess on your carpet. It also doesnt fully protect it as it will still cause indentations through it. I use the Ikea floor protector and it is much better.

It does move around a little. Mine fits between the legs of my desk so its not too bad. I am sure that you will be able to get something to attach it to keep it in place though.

i have a board that is covered in carpet tiles approx. 5`x 5` that sits beneath my chair and stuff to protect the main carpet in the spare bedroom where my gaming set up is. nothing worse than carpet being ruined where the chair castors are and the other 99% of it being perfect.

Replace the wheels with larger ones. Seriously. You can get 3inch wheels for office chairs, these work really well on carpet.
Think mine are Antaprcis 3-Inch Rollerblade Office Chair Wheels

Alternatively office chair gliders are a thing, smooth metal/plastic mushrooms that replace the wheels.. Move pretty well on carpet (dont know how well either would work on deep pile...)

tbh the surface contact area on those Antaprcis wheels would be less than on double wheel flat profile rollers of a slightly smaller diameter anyway from what i can see .
most good office chairs you can spec for carpet roller or hard floor roller. and will come with twin rollers per leg.
looking at the Antaprcis 3-Inch Rollerblade Office Chair Wheels. they have a tapered cross section so even though the diameter is large the contact patch is quite small and would dig into a carpet more than a flat cross section double wheel castor
as the load wouldnt be spread as well. i think they would still mark the carpet and put dents in it.

sliders i must admit ive not tried but they would have to be pretty large to spread the load enough to not mark the carpet. may get a set to try.

however the best ive found so far is thin ply covered in durable short pile carpet tiles,(color match can be a thing though) the load is spread pretty much over the whole area of the board and when lifted there is no marking of the carpet underneath.
it doesn't look as nice to have a board over your gaming area but to protect the carpet its still the best imo. it can always be lifted or put under a bed or behind a wardrobe when your chair isnt in use.

Carpet... a transparent floor protector is essential. Buy a good one though ~ the thicker they are the longer the last and give the highest level of protection. Oh, and try to get one that isn't sold folded up!

I use a woven rug/mat. Its hardwearing and won't disintegrate like an offcut.

So some time after my purchase and use of the Ikea Kolon I thought I would report back. It does a good job of protecting the carpet, but it does move with use and I find the need to readjust it every couple of days or so.
