How do you read this statement

"You can deposit until 1st sept 2016"

Do you think that means
1) you can take the action until 31st aug
2) you can take the action until and including the 1st sept

I have always taken until in a situation like this to be inclusive
eg if i said sure come round anytime until tuesday I would mean including tuesday if i wasnt including tuesday I would say anytime before Tuesday, or, until Monday

I understand people will vary on this just wondered what people think is the more normal usage of until, does it mean inclusive or exclusive?

I read it as inclusive, all ways have come to think of it, other wise they should explicitly state "not including" but thats just me.

Inclusive. But because most things start or end on monthly dates I would check with the company concerned that it did include 1st.

Option 2, so inclusive. Likely a day's grace from 31st August because of the bank holiday.

Any time a date is quoted regardless of the words round it, most people will take it as the "drop-dead" date where they must do something.

Why take the chance? Always assume the worst (in this instance up to 23:59 on 31st) and hope for the best.

Nothing like being ambiguous but I take that as inclusive of the 1st.

I like to err on the side of caution. If it is something like a credit card repayment date, it would be inclusive of that date.

I would say it would include the 1st however as others I would urge on the side of caution and do it before that date.

Thanks all, was generally what i thought, I agree its a bit ambiguous and as such I would personally be cautious, it wasn't me it was the other half.

It was a rolling month that just happened to have the 1st listed.

I am going to challenge the company based on poor communication as for a month their website has been saying you have until the 1st to deposit more money to get a bonus, on the 1st the message has gone. Annoying as the money was sent yesterday but didn't register until today. I told her a monht ago when first opened to send it all but you know what womenz can be like

I read it as until the first. So ends on the 31st. I'd say it's pretty clear!

If what it relates to benefits them only, then go with the option 2. If it only benefits you, then go with option 1.

If in doubt, always go for the conservative one - that way you're either early, or bang on time.

'Until' I would take as the day before. If a voucher expired 'on' a day, I would take as inclusive.

"Until". How can it be inclusive? It's up to midnight on the 31st. I don't see the ambiguity at all.
