How do you set up a proxy to play foreign games?

Basically i'd like to play a Japanese game but it requires a proxy to connect to it so how would I go about sorting one out so it thinks i'm connecting from Japan so I can play?

Rent a VPS in Japan, set up an SSH tunnel to it, do a dance.

Fairly simple if you know how to do the first two.

Does it absolutely need to be a Japanese IP, which will cost you more, or will somewhere reasonably close like South Korea or Hong Kong suffice?

I think so yeah, I could try Hong Kong though. Is there any free ones at all anywhere, or any free software?
