How do you gain a Bike licence these days? I believe you have to get a CBT and ride on that for a while before you can get a 'proper' licence but I'm not entirely sure? Am I also right in assuming you can't ride anything higher than a 125cc with a CBT?

You do your CBT and then you can ride anything up to 125cc with at most 14.6hp for two years before you have to retake it.

Then you have to do your theory test which contains 50 multiple choice questions and a hazard perception test.

Now we're on to the test proper! There are two tests, Mod 1, which is slow speed manoeuvers in an off-road test centre, and Mod 2, which is the on-road assessment.

If you're under 21 then you'll be restricted to bikes with a maximum of 25kW power for two years. If you're over 21 then you can choose to do Direct Access, where you take your test on a larger engined bike in order to allow you to ride any bike after you pass.

On this subject what institutions are recommended for CBT and DA courses? Do any places offer 1 week intensive courses that aim to get you through the whole lot, CBT, DA and theory, in one go?

Hopefully ok to ask this in your thread PiKe.

I believe so, but I'd recommend a more relaxed approach.

The theory is something you do in your own time before starting any course.

I done mine with surrey motorcycle school and it was great. (although pretty far from you :-\)

I done my theory then booked a 4 day intensive course.

Done CBT day one, Mod 1 day three, and Mod 2 day four.

I passed so it was fine, but if you mess up any of the tests then it can get very expensive (due to missed test costs not being reimbursed).

Can someone detail the costs to get riding please such as the cost of the cbt, safety gear and which 125 bike is recommended. I will only be commuting and doing 20 miles at most.

How many miles to the gallon would you get from a 125 realistically.

I have a Yamaha YBR 125 Cusom, Bought it brand new last year and got a years free insurance and 3 years no MOT. Which was good. Fuel wise, It costs me about £10-£12 to fill up, and get around 190-200 Miles, obviously, it depends on how and where you ride :)

how are people doing CBT on their own bike if they dont have insurance or anything? i mean how are people getting the bike to the place?

If your with the instructor, your insured under their insurance i assume.

Do all 125's sound terrible?

Most scooters do... 125's that sound good are usually custom/cruiser bikes. They have nice beefy exhausts on then :P. I have to replace my Cg cos im too bug for it so im getting a Honda Shadow VT 125 :D.

If it's not the schools bike I don't think their insurance can cover it.

People doing CBT's on their own bikes are likely redoing it because it's about to run out.

did my cbt, rode for a year and then gig my full test with a 2 day intensive riding.

i went with a private teacher so its worth looking at the private lessons you might get a deal

Can anyone tell me what costs are involved? How much will safety gear and the CBT itself cost?
