how do you stop windows auto filling the screen

Windows 7, when i move a window so its edge goes off the screen it will auto fill the screen when it reaches a certain point, bloody annoying! How do you stop it?

Type 'snap' into the start menu search box, select 'Turn off automatic window arrangement', and in the window that appears tick 'Prevent windows from being automatically arranged...' then click on Ok/Apply.

But how are Windows 7 users expected to guess that they need to write 'snap' in a search box for this option screen to pop up :confused:

I'm a windows 7 user and I knew what it's called and how to disable it. That's what the forums are for, exchanging knowledge and helping others out. :)

Why are you turning it off? It's a really useful feature. It only kicks in when the windows's right at the edge of the screen; if you want the window off the screen, minimise it. :confused:
 
All shake does is minimise all currently open windows other than the one currently being shaken, how is that going to help?

Thanks for the snap tip, even though it'll never be disabled in my house, it'll be useful for those with difficulties adjusting to new things.

It only does that when the cursor gets to the edge of the screen - not the window. If you want to move a window off screen without it snapping to the edge, just grab the window by the point furthest away from the side you want to move it to. Then it won't snap until pretty much all the window has gone off screen and you most likely wouldn't want it to move any further.
 
I need this as i like to have windows open to reference their contents but only have a small laptop monitor, minimising them will mean i cant see the bit i want to reference when im working in other windows. It was taking ages to jig around the windows small enough while leaving the bit i still wanted to see on screen.

Didnt realise it checked for the cursor position though, but this Snap thing is now off and life is much better :)
 
My bad, Windows 7 was my idea.

I love the half-screen snap feature, wish it some-how supported dual monitors (at work) so I could have 4 half-screens available.

I'd love to have a feature where the snap place is customisable. So if I hold CTRL while doing it, it would snap to a 1/3 instead of half. Useful for when I watch Megavideo on the side in the browser.

My desktop is 1920x1200 i have several windows open at a time, game top left, TVcatchup (streamed t.v) top right and msn lower right.

Its freaking anoying everytime i organise my windows around the desktop snap kicks in.
