I'm currently running a Radeon HD 5870 and I'm considering an upgrade. How does my card stack up nowadays? I assume I'll see a significant difference by upgrading to a 7950 or 7970?

I'm currently running a 22" ' 1680 x 1050 but will likely upgrade to either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Can't afford/justify the jump to 1440p :(

You should see anything from a 40 to 100% performance increase with the 7950 depending on the game.

But the 5870 is still a fairly strong card at 1920 x 1080P.

I went from a 6950 to a 7870, it made anything up to a 50% diffrance which i thught was worth it, the 6950 was a little laggy in a couple of the latest FPS games.

Definitely, and the 7950 is perfect for 1440P

Nice to hear that, thinking of going 1440p myself, my son uses my 670 now (he games more than i do so made sense to give him that and buy a 7850 for me, or at least it seemed to at the time :( ). I don't think i'll get away with a 7970 on top of a new monitor, 7950 will get me a moan but that i can deal with.

a heavily overclocked 5870 is still formidable at up to 1080p . at your res you will be fine for a while if you dont want to max every game out .

I still play on ultra @ 1920 on far cry 3 :) And thats on a 5850, I can see it struggle a little but nothing that would ruin it though. Cpus a Q6600 and 8gig still.

highlander whats your 5850 clocked at , i could run mine @1000/1200 and thats gaming . for benching it could go higher .
its lasted me 3 years and is the best card i have ever owned .

cheers

I'm in the same situation as you. I have a 5870 clocked at 1050/1300. I got a 7970 last week and the improvement was pretty big. Sent the 7970 back due to reasons listed in another thread and tbh the 5870 plays all my games fine. That doesn't stop the upgrade itch though :p
