Can anyone shed any light on this? ive got an Item that broke in the house and im looking to claim on our new for old cover... is there an excess etc? The item in question is a Laptop with a broken screen, I brought the laptop originally for around £700, do I get the money through the bank and do they have to receive the laptop and inspect it?

It depends on who the insurer is re excess etc.

Some insurers will give vouchers, sometimes they will cash settle (vary rare) others have service suppliers who will collect the laptop, look to repair it. They then confirm if it is Beyond Economical Repair. If so they will recommend and supply the replacement. You should be able to negotiate with them for anythng else you want i.e desk top / tower. You could even try for a cash settlement at this stage however the insurer will probably only offer the amount they would have paid their service supplier (Insurers get great discounts due to volume of business).

Its worth remebering that the insurer has to indemnify you so they cannot give you anything that is inferior to you existing machine and as computers progress in technology so quickly, you will probably end up with a decent upgrade.

If they ask you for a contribution, refuse.

Hope this helps

I know the laptop is beyond repair, im on it now, except theres a rather large smile across the screen!

It certainly looks fubar'd :D

The only other thing I can recommend is if they do collect for inspection, try and get all your info off of it. Chances are that if they accept your claim, they will keep your damaged laptop for salvage value...

I wouldnt have said so;

£700 worth laptop

Vs

£250+Labour screen

Yup depends how much it will cost them for a new screen, I'd have said it was fixable fo rnot a lot of cash but all depends on what your insurer is like.

Depends on make of laptop, I have seen claims when Dell want near on £1000 for replacement screens. I have seen some that have been repaired but majority were replaced.
