How does one count Dead Pixels?

When one counts dead pixels is it just a rule of thumb or is there a formula?

If as some members state they have a "blob" how can they determine exactly how many pixels make up the blob? It could be paragon shaped and would make counting difficult.

Obviously if one had a number of blobs, ranging from 1 (one) through to say 20 dead pixels it would make counting easier.

Does it happen that a customer counts his blob using the rule of thumb, states a number of dead pixels to the manufacturer, returns the monitor only to be told that he has counted incorrectly and has the monitor returned to him?

Sending a refurb monitor seems like a rip off to me, imagine buying a new car and discovering a major fault and being palmed off with a refurb!

First off, pixel = picture element...2 pixels next to eachother does not equal 1 pixel, so only the most unscrupulous manufacturer would ever count them as such (and I've never heard of such a practice). Some manufacturers go as far as giving minimum tolerable distances between dead pixels (i.e. they may not be close together) so such a scenario would likely count in your favour. Counting dead pixels is literally just counting.

If you did have touching dead pixels then draw some joined dots in paint and see if you can hide them behind the pixel(s) by moving the window.

I don't want to encourage paranoia though, dead pixels aren't worth losing sleep over and aren't all that common. If they really bother you then pay for a pixel check.

some places will give you a dead pixel free monitor as they personally check the monitor first. so if you buy from a place that does one, get it or you are likely to get one with dead pixels!

Most monitors sold to Joe Public can have a certain number of stuck subpixels (quite a few) which are stuck on 1 colour, and they can also have 1 or 2 dead pixels - but I think that depends upon the manufacturer. These are not classed as a defect, unless you have more than a specified amount.

Stinks, don't you think?

yeah, i have a stuck pixel on a 15 inch medion monitor my dad uses atm home for work. its in the top-right-center of the screen, but your eyes stop noticing it after a while.
