How does PayPal work outside of eBay?

Make sure if using PayPal to only use the
Buying an item /service option
If they try any excuses why they can only
Accept friends and family option
Walk away

The only method which ensures he gets the item he paid for (which was his question) is cash on collection but unfortunately that's pretty much a no go currently.

A bank transfer won't ensure he receives the item and he won't get his money returned if he doesn't.

Neither will PayPal ensure he receives the item but it does have some payment protection if he doesn't.

Right but my point still stands. Doesn't matter what payment method you use it still stands as there is always that chance you won't receive the item.

PayPal is classed as a money wallet and a lot of places accept PP these days. Steam is a well known example, and also Samsung as I got my S20 Ultra from there on PP Credit (0% for 4 months).

Other examples of money wallets are Neteller and Skrill although they're not as widely accepted.

How things have changed. Back in then day if you were trading on the internet and accepted PayPal you were classed as small time and not worth bothering, only those who accepted straight up card payments were to be accepted and worthy of your business. Now it's the other way round, if you don't accept PayPal or Apple Pay for Google Pay then nobody wants to deal with you.

Back on topic, COD or COC is the old safe way for all parties. Even sellers can be scammed out of their item/money with PayPal.

Paypal will often put a hold on payments received for up to 21 days, if its something out of the ordinary (never used paypal before, or not had money in the account for months) you can then speed up the release of this money by providing tracking details.

I experienced this myself recently, being on lockdown I had a clear out of random stuff, sold a load of things on facebook which went through paypal, money was held until confirmed delivery. Up until then I hadn't used paypal for several years.

Also if any DD does appear and takes money I'll get it back under the DD Guarantee that everyone seems to forget about.

Quite frankly, if you can't be bothered to check your bank for months on end then you deserve it.

If there's a guarantee in place then why the need to check daily. Checking more frequently won't prevent an unauthorized DD being setup, you'll just notice sooner and get your money back quicker, you're not stopping anyone.

Do people who have better things to do with their day deserve to be victims of crime?

I get an alert on my phone from Starling when a new DD is added. If I didn't authorise it I can take action e.g. by deleting it and then contacting the originator to check what the score is.

Clarkson could have had is £500 back under the DD guarantee scheme if he so wished. He probably had creeps paying money into his account too when he published is account number so probably all balanced out.

Keeping check of your finances isn't one of the better things to do with your day? PayPal is just more admin and faff taking up more time if you want to put it like that.

I'm i the only one who avoids paying with paypal? Not used paypal for soo many years. Avoid.

Tried to purchase some very cheap,Lego sets from China advertised through FB ,they were that cheap it was worth a gamble .

Thought I would pay with PayPal to be protected , 1 month later no correspondence so raised an issue through PayPal and had refund notification on Friday morning

Only use FB marketplace for stuff local that I can go and collect myself or delivered by local seller if they are offering. Wouldn't buy anything advertised on it from China or any other country.

You probably are, can I ask why you avoid?
I've been using it on a bi-weekly basis since it came out and never had a problem.
Too many scams with PayPal and just don't trust it.

In my early days I did use PayPal when I purchased items on ebay. No longer do that as I just use my credit card.
When purchasing items on gumtree or other market place sites, I'll just pay cash. On few occasions bank transfer.

I have only ever used PayPal to buy things on ebay.
Someone wants to buy some thing from me and I'm wary of giving out my account number and sort code.
What I'm concerned about is that they could send the money to my PayPal, I then send the goods and they then cancel the payment and I'm left out of pocket?
Is this possible?

I would give out my bank account number any day over using Paypal which is open to abuse.

On a similar tangent, as a seller how 'exposed' would accepting payment via their credit facility leave you?

I prefer to use BACS when selling high value items to strangers. I have a seemingly genuine buyer looking to use their credit facility and want to ensure I've no risk of getting shafted with a rescinded payment etc.
