How does porting a number work?

My Iphone 3g contract is up and as much as i think the Iphone is a good phone i've had a play with the N900 at work and its quite frankly my perfect phone.

I'm ready to press buy on the nokia store to get one on an 18 month contract but i don't know how to port my number. I've been with 02 for 10 years so never dealt with pac codes.

Do i cancel my contract with 02, wait for my pac then order the N900? Or can i order the N900 now get my pac code off 02 and transfer my number when it arrives?

If you are at the end of your contract all you do is call up o2 and ask for you pac code. Once you have it, just give it to the people you are signing a new contract with and they will do the rest. No need to do anything else.
